Purdue University has been ranked #20 globally (and #7 among US Public Universities) in interdisciplinary sciences. As a strong believer in the power of interdisciplinary research, I am especially proud of this achievement. Interdisciplinary research requires speaking multiple "languages" and adapting to the idiosyncrasies of different scientific domains. Purdue Computer Science leads the way in areas like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data science while collaborating with disciplines ranging from engineering and medicine to agriculture and the humanities. Dr Lunjia Hu, an incoming assistant professor at Northwestern University, USA, is ooking for students to join the Northeastern CS?PhD program (https://lnkd.in/e8KKRbK3)?in Fall 2025. I am excited to announce that I have successfully completed a one-month college-level course, "Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science" under the guidance of Dr. Rajiv Gandhi from the University of Pennsylvania (https://lnkd.in/gRtdK2Kz -Summer equivalent of UPenn CIS 160). This experience has been incredibly enriching and pivotal in my academic journey. Throughout the course, I delved into the core mathematical concepts that form the backbone of computer science. Key learnings include: 1. **Combinatorics and Graph Theory**: Understanding the fundamentals of counting and the structure of graphs, which are crucial for algorithm design and optimization. 2. **Logic and Proof Techniques**: Mastering logical reasoning and various proof methods such as induction, contradiction, and direct proofs, essential for validating algorithms and theories. 3. **Discrete Probability**: Gaining insights into probability theory and its applications in computer science, which is vital for fields like machine learning and data science. This course has significantly strengthened my mathematical foundation and sharpened my analytical skills, preparing me for future academic challenges and opportunities. Important resources below ! I wanted to add that, for prospective PhD students, it's important to remember that a PhD is fundamentally a 1:1 mentorship. Choosing an advisor who aligns with your career goals and can guide your research effectively is far more crucial than simply selecting a high-ranked university. While the two may correlate, meaningful research can be conducted without the prestige of a top institution.

Today the annual Cornell, Maryland, Max Planck Pre-doctoral Research School in Computer Science (link below) is kicking off again here in Saarbrücken. The model is very different to the other summer schools I am aware of. Instead of targeting researchers in a specific area, the school targets undergraduate and master students across all of CS. The organizers screen applications specifically with an eye on diversity, in terms of gender, geography, and interests. The program features ten lecturers in very different areas, and combines the lectures with panels on industry vs. academia, a poster session, group mentoring sessions, and plenty of breaks for mingling and networking among each other and with the faculty from the participating institutions. For attendees all/most expenses (travel, accommodation, meals) are covered thanks to sponsors. The key goal of the program is to teach students what research in computer science is, help them make informed decisions on whether a PhD is for them, and provide information on the process from applications, to choosing a school, and getting the most out of their PhD. As such, this program is a great driver for improving diversity in CS earlier in the pipeline. While some schools are great at preparing undergraduates for potential research careers, and making them aware of what they need to do, the majority of institutions globally are not (including many top schools). As a result, most students do not have access to the right information, or find out too late. CMMRS is doing one small part to address this.
