The Farm Bill is a massive investment passed every five years, typically with bipartisan support, and invests hundreds of billions into agriculture, food programs, conservation, and more. The Farm Bill needs to pass through Congress by September, so it’s rather surprising that, according to our recent polling, 29% of Californians have not heard much about the Farm Bill, and a whopping 48% have never even heard of it at all! Despite that, when asked about the issue areas that the farm bill funds programs for — from combating wildfires to keeping water clean to affordable food benefits — the vast majority of participants supported them and expressed concerns about cuts. ‘Protecting Local Agriculture’ - this is the 4th Ep. in the series I filmed with the WWF Thailand team in Kuiburi National Park, Thailand. Today, our President Richard McCarthy brought the voice of our Farmers Market community of practice, at the meeting of agricultural organisations from the G7 countries in Ortigia, Sicily. He presented a Manifesto explaining the benefits of direct selling and measures to promote local food systems. The points raised by the WorldFMC to the G7 Ministers of Agriculture are: 1. Direct-to-Consumer: Promote of the development of short supply chain sales models, based on the direct relationship between producer and citizen-consumer. 2. Biodiversity: Ensure policies for the preservation and restoration of biodiversity. 3. Family Farming: To support, with investments and concrete actions, the role of family farming, a means of guaranteeing food sovereignty for all countries in the world. 4. Urban-Rural: Foster new relations between rural and urban areas that protects the countryside whilst creates more sustainable and human-friendly cities. 5. Multifunctional Agriculture: Promote the model of multifunctional agriculture, a strategy that addresses the depopulation of the countryside by creating new opportunities for entrepreneurism

?? Tackling Water Scarcity in Agriculture: A Global Priority! At the 3rd edition of the Rome Water Dialogue on Water Scarcity in Agriculture, experts from around the world came together to address a critical question: How can we use water more efficiently in agriculture to ensure food security for all? ???? A major milestone of the event was the adoption of the Rome Declaration on Water Scarcity in Agriculture, where global leaders, including our Dutch Water Envoy, Meike van Ginneken, stepped up to make a difference. Meike was elected as the Vice Chair of the Steering Committee of WASAG—a vital partnership hosted by FAO. ?? This collaboration brings together government agencies, international organizations, research institutions, and advocacy groups to drive innovative policies, strategies, and programs that help agriculture adapt to increasing water scarcity. ?? Why does this matter? Water scarcity is one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. Agriculture—spanning crops, livestock, fisheries, aquaculture, and forestry—accounts for most of the global freshwater usage and is both a contributor to and victim of this crisis. With rising temperatures and extreme weather impacting food production, the urgency to address this issue is clearer than ever. ?? The Netherlands stands firmly committed to supporting WASAG and fostering global cooperation to ensure we’re prepared for this challenge. ?????? Let's meet David and his mother Nicole, dairy #farmers in the East of France. With the support of partners from the program ?????? 2 ?????????? ?????? ??????????, they have implemented new practices linked to #regenerative agriculture. On their farm, David & Nicole decided to focus on the well-being of their cows and the preservation of #soil life by: ?? Installing fans and mattresses in the dairy cow building ?? Planting trees and hedges ?? Reducing soil tillage and enriching the soil with organic matter ?? All these actions contribute to improving animal comfort, increasing #milk production, and reducing #greenhouse gas emissions. This multi-faceted approach is important in securing the environmental and economic resilience of farms to ensure the renewal of generations. ?? This program has flourished through collaborative efforts and collective approach involving farmers and program partners: Danone, Institut de l'Elevage (idele), MiiMOSA and Les Prés Rient Bio. What if farms could restore nature and inspire people? ?? At Frutos del Guacabo in Puerto Rico, this vision is a reality. Their innovative approach to farming is transforming the way we think about agriculture and sustainability. They collaborate with chefs to innovate and enhance Puerto Rico’s cuisine and engage with students to show that farming is an exciting career. By enriching soil with compost and using hydroponics, they promote sustainability and urban farming, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem. Our 2024/25 protocol is here. The protocol is the document that guides what we measure, and how we measure it. Over 6 months, we integrated feedback from: Over 500 farmers NGOs including WWF-UK and National Trust The Exchange Farmer Advisory board The Exchange Science Advisory board The result is an upgraded methodology that includes vital new metrics like Soil Cover %, Food Production and Nutrient Balances. Plus improvements to how we measure many of the metrics across all our 6 impact areas of soil health, carbon, biodiversity, animal welfare , water and social. Our top priority was developing a protocol that truly benefits farmers. The metrics we use must help farmers access financial rewards, make practical improvements, and be straightforward to implement. The aim being to ensure Exchange is accessible to all farmers, regardless of their type or scale of operation.
