This fall, the ULI Health Leaders Network convened in Vancouver, BC, to explore how the city promotes health and social equity through urban development. Over four days, the cohort connected with local experts, toured new projects, and exchanged ideas to advance equitable communities. Highlights included: ?? A tour of sθ?q?lxen?m | ts’exwts’áxwi7 (Rainbow Park), a former parking lot turned community gathering place in the heart of downtown ??? A discussion with representatives of the MST Development Corporation, an Indigenous-owned development firm leading attainable housing in the city ???????? A meeting with the developers and residents of Our Urban Village, a “cohousing lite” project characterized by community and affordability. Read more about these and other projects illustrating health and equity in action in our recent Urban Land article: https://bit.ly/48KfgJg Interested in becoming the next Health Leader? ULI is now recruiting for the eighth cohort! Visit uli.org/healthleaders to apply by November 18, 2024.

It was great to be part of this morning’s session “The built environment and health: connecting research to practice”. ?It was clear that cities are fundamental in shaping the environment and the environment impacts on our health and wellbeing. Researchers have an important role in defining the policy problem and when the policy problem is defined, then research needs to inform the problem solving. ?A focus on implementation is key, moving beyond the problem.?
Our built and neighbourhood systems heavily shape our health. In fact, our postcode is one of the strongest predictors of our life expectancy. Along with confounding inequities, the local environments around us have the power to make us healthy — but they can also create barriers to wellbeing. That's why VicHealth is starting day three of the World Health Summit in Melbourne, hosting a session connecting urban planning, research, policy and practice. Thank you to UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), Infrastructure Victoria's Jonathan Spear, Prof Billie Giles-Corti and Deakin University's Prof Anna Timperio for joining the conversation with our very own Michelle Murray.

?? Free webinar: Boosting health in Local Plans (Mon 30 September, 2-3pm) Local government planners and public health officers can learn how to make best use of a new framework for creating healthy Local Plans in a free webinar. Co-hosted by the TCPA and TRUUD (Tackling Root causes upstream of Unhealthy Urban Development), the webinar will launch and explore the new framework which provides evidence, guidance and inspiration for building in health to Local Plans at the earliest opportunity. The framework was created with planning and public health officers from seven local authorities in England –?Bristol City Council, Guildford Borough Council, Medway Council, Northumberland County Council, Southampton City Council, Surrey County Council, Walsall Council – in response to research that found that although Local Plans are key documents for creating healthy places, they are often weak and inconsistent on how exactly this can be achieved. A briefing note, 'Developing a Healthy Planning Framework', sets out the research and steps towards improving the inclusion of health for Local Plans and TCPA Healthy Place-making webpages contain further useful resources. ?? Nature is Restorative: A Fresh Perspective on Healing ?? Have you ever wondered how a touch of nature can impact your health? Dr. Nicole Sleeman M.D., from Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA), is leading the charge in exploring the transformative power of nature-based prescriptions. Her passion highlights a growing field that recognizes the profound benefits of connecting with nature for both physical and mental well-being. ?? The evidence is compelling: Studies from hospitals reveal that post-operative patients with views of plants or trees from their windows experience fewer complications and require less pain relief compared to those without such natural views. This fascinating research underscores how even a simple visual connection to nature can enhance recovery and overall health. The health sector perspective is an important one that should form part of what must be a multidisciplinary approach to solving our livability challenges. Curious to learn more? Hope Atlanta's COO, Elizabeth Banks, MPH recently joined an insightful breakout session at the ARCHI Collaborative State of Metro Atlanta Health Symposium alongside Kathryn Lawler from Mercy Care and Mary Spanburgh from Kaiser Permanente. This dynamic panel explored the critical intersection of housing and health, highlighting innovative solutions and policy-driven strategies for the Metro Atlanta community. Key Breakout Highlights The session focused on: - Supportive Housing Services: Discussing how permanent supportive housing transforms health outcomes and emphasizing the need for sustained wraparound services to keep residents stable and healthy. - Health Barriers Due to Housing Instability: Addressing the real-world challenges posed by housing instability, including disrupted care, hospital discharge issues, and limited access to essential health services. - Supply and Access Challenges: Examining the urgent need for more affordable housing and accessible healthcare, while proposing collaborative solutions. - The Melody: Highlighting this integrative health and housing model as an innovative approach that bridge housing stability with health services to ensure holistic support for residents. This model represent a meaningful step toward aligning housing, health, and supportive services for better outcomes. Action-Driven Dialogue Attendees engaged in thoughtful discussions, exploring questions such as: - What specific policies can better address the link between housing and health? - How can health systems and housing organizations collaborate more effectively to improve outcomes for vulnerable populations? Elizabeth, Kathryn, Mary, and all participants worked together to generate actionable insights and practical steps for future advocacy, policy, and on-the-ground collaboration in building a healthier and more equitable Metro Atlanta. #HOPEAtlanta #HousingAndHealth #MetroAtlantaHealth #CommunityImpact #SupportiveHousing #HealthEquity #IntegrativeModels #Collaboration

Urban health Driving health equity for cities and communities: the work of Belo Horizonte’s urban observatory Given the importance of accurate, disaggregated and detailed health data to inform each city’s policy and practice, why do so few cities have such data? Or if they do, it’s not available at city and sub-city level, or at household and community level. But see Waleska Teixeira Caiaffa’s account of the Belo Horizonte Observatory for Urban Health (OSUBH) and its partners in government, academia and community, working together to address this. https://lnkd.in/emZwd5iZ

This American Heart Association policy statement presents a conceptual framework, summarizes the evidence base and outlines policy principles for transforming key urban provisioning systems to heart-health and sustainability outcomes. https://spr.ly/6044XdW7p At present, nearly 56% of the global population (nearly 4.4 billion people) live in cities and by 2050, that’s expected to increase to 6.6 billion inhabitants or over 70% of the world’s population. This level of population growth will necessitate massive upgrades and the development of new infrastructure to allow for smart, sustainable, and healthy cities of the future. There is widespread recognition that although cities can serve as engines of economic growth and innovation, a vast majority of them are currently failing this mandate, and are not delivering on environmental, health economic, and equity targets. Transforming urban systems with a cardiometabolic health first approach will help mitigate undesirable environmental exposures, improve cardiovascular and metabolic health while improving planetary health.

On behalf of Nazeem Muhajarine, PhD, FCAHS and Sahana Ramamoorthy, SPHERU is pleased to share with you the enclosed report titled,?Health and well-being informed city-building and design practices:?A survey of Saskatoon city-councillors and employees. ? This report summarizes the key findings from a study conducted in Spring 2024, the aim was to understand how municipal decision-makers and employees integrate health and well-being evidence into their decision-making for city-building and design. We found, notably, while municipal professionals recognize the impact of the built environment on health, they often prioritize healthcare over broader determinants such as income, education, and social context. Furthermore, governance challenges, including political constraints and insufficient collaboration between public health and city authorities, create barriers to integrating health and well-being into city-building. These and other insights are explored in greater depth in the attached research brief, adding to the roadmap for a healthier, more inclusive Saskatoon. This interesting, and captivating read is well worth every minute, especially considering the imminent municipal elections. Additionally, a good reminder to get out there and vote!
