The NGC has set ambitious goals for the UK in 2050 – 1.5 GW of geothermal power generation capacity and 10 GW of geothermal heat. ?? A geothermal industry of this scale could avoid CO2 emissions of about 10 million tons per annum, and create about 50,000 jobs with a lot more other indirect jobs in associated industries. So how do we get there? Key to this endeavour will be collaboration, something at the core of the NGC. ?? A great day meeting many of the key people who will bring geothermal energy to the UK… but lots to do as well Highest priority is get a regulatory and licensing structure in place to cover on shore extraction of heat like they have in Germany. Without being sure you will be able to continue to keep the pumps at work and no-one else will swipe “your” heat I can’t see funding being forthcoming… Great we have the NGC to push this to the next Government as a significant priority. But WOW what a win it will be .: cheap and reliable heat is down there under our feet. Renewables of tomorrow is about “solar, wind and geothermal”

We're publishing a series of reports into different aspects of UK energy. This report considers #geothermal energy: what it is, the state of Deep Geothermal in the UK, and key policy recommendations to see the sector grow. To accelerate the growth of Deep Geothermal in the UK, we would like the incoming government take steps to: ? develop a Deep Geothermal Strategy, which sets out national targets for #heat and #power, and the policies and funding mechanisms that will enable industry to deliver these targets. ? deliver a Geothermal Development Incentive by the end of 2025, targeted at shovel-ready geothermal heat projects, to get the sector established in the UK. ? review and amend existing financial support mechanisms so they better support routes to market for geothermal e.g., by ringfencing the Contracts for Difference budget for geothermal projects or reconfiguring the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme to deliver strategically important geothermal projects, such as NHS sites that require high heat loads.
