It's hard to believe it is 7 years on from the most tragic and shocking failure of a building in modern times. Grenfell has triggered a much needed shake up of legislation and changes to practice. This is throughout from product testing, design through to build management and quality. As an industry we don't need to just change our legislation but our attitude to building safety. Everyone should be safe in their home. as a newly qualified Architect, I always use Grenfell as a point of reflection. when I meet a client or contractor who argues why they have to follow our specifications because it 'costs more' I always remind them of the 72 people who lost their lives, and the families and neighbourhood which have been effected. The new changes in legislation have ensured attention is given to the safety of a building throughout it's use and start. I, as well as many of my peers are still finding our way through the new regulations. They are generally complex and in places not clear. It is imperative that as an industry we come together to ensure the new regulations are clear and unambiguous to avoid the repeat of such a tragedy.

The Ready, Set, Go! Program is a grant-funded initiative aimed at preparing fire departments and their communities for wildfire risk. Firefighters are some of the most respected voices in their communities; by providing outreach, education, and resources to members of their public, fire departments can create fire-adapted communities long before emergencies occur. In a crisis, this kind of preparation can make it safer for both civilians and first responders to handle the event. In my latest blog post I talk about the challenges and frustrations the Canadian Fire Service has had in trying to get sprinklers adopted into the NBC. Opponents point to an overly simplistic calculation to say that the costs to install are not worth the value of lives saved. This reasoning failed to consider the many other benefits such as injury and cancer reductions, reduced impact on the environment, and more.
