Why do bathrooms matter? Well, generally shelter bathrooms are clean and functional but don’t usually rank high on the list of priorities for design and ambiance. But at the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission, we believe differently. Over the last several years, we have been updating and remodeling our building to create warm, inviting spaces that bring forth a desire in our guests for change and restoration. We host guests who have experienced trauma in institutional spaces so we create spaces that don’t trigger memories from those traumas. Our tours don’t include seeing our guests bathrooms. So, when the places that are just for our guests look equally as warm and inviting as the places seen by our donors and volunteers, we send the message to our guests that they are loved and they matter. Bathrooms matter. People matter. This is just one example of how your donations are making a difference in the lives of our guests. According to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs Housing Needs Assessment, household growth has outpaced housing growth since 2013. There is a huge shortage of affordable housing in Georgia, leading many lower-income families to rent. However, rents are also increasing with high demand, leaving low-income families in a precarious position. To keep costs low for the families we serve, Habitat for Humanity offers zero-interest mortgages. Did you know that at the end of our leases, CIL donates the homes back to the service providers? For us, the work we do is about more than just building homes; it's about building stronger communities. We're excited to announce that this past June, CIL donated a home in Lakeville, MA, and three homes in Brockton, MA to BAMSI. CIL also handed over the keys to a home in Norton, MA to Horace Mann Educational Associates. At CIL, we believe in designing for everyone. That means creating homes that are accessible and welcoming to all. That’s why we strive to incorporate universal design principles, ensuring our homes can accommodate residents of all ages and abilities. From accessible bathrooms and extra-wide hallways to lift-supporting trusses, every detail is thoughtfully designed to allow residents to "age in place" and live comfortably. At Rebuilding Together Richmond (RT RVA), we're proud to share the impact we’re making in the Brookland Park and Highland Park communities, thanks to a two-year grant from Lowe's Companies, Inc. With $85,000 annually, we’re repairing at least six homes per year, helping families and seniors live in safe, comfortable homes.
