FANR1200 Natural History of Georgia students welcomed high schoolers from Oconee County to showcase what they’ve learned this semester. From soil science and bird calls to venomous snakes and tree ID, teams presented their topics in an engaging and creative ways. The event not only gave our students practice presenting, but more importantly introduced high schoolers to the exciting field of natural resources. #Warnell #uga #naturalresources

I’ve just spent 5 mindachingly exciting days getting to grips with soil health and balance using Soil food web principles with Daniel Tyrkiel and Adam Swan at Soil Ecology Lab. The ability to change our soil’s resilience and productivity is there, using multiple techniques. The greater understanding we have to it’s function and utilising a multifaceted approach, we can help speed up the moving to re enlivening soils and plant growth. My main takeaways- 1 There is no magic bullet 2 Soil food web is critical- as part of the toolkit 3 I know even less than I thought.

This is such a crucial thing to understand. Most of us live in a paradigm in which sustainability and productivity are mutually exclusive. This goes for agriculture, but equally for other areas of life. Nature Restoration Law? They're trying to take our land out of agricultural production! Regenerative agriculture? Must be less productive than industrial! Healthy work culture? Must be at the expense of business output! If 'sustainability' is an afterthought, it's extra effort and less productive. Produce industrially, and create additional biodiversity habitat and it's a cost factor. Produce regeneratively and integrate biodiversity and it's a cost saver. Our language reflects the fallacy of this paradigm. The image of the "work-life balance" seesaw illustrates this nicely: When extra weight is placed on work, I lose life. Work sucks life out of me. When extra weight is placed on life, I lose productivity. My life takes away work. Do you catch yourself thinking in this way from time to time? Unless we step out of this paradigm, all our sustainability and 'regenerative' efforts won't work. Contribution and work are integrated into life. Nature and biodiversity are integrated into agriculture. If they are integrated harmoniously, we experience a significant boost - we work hand in hand with life and nature. If they are out of whack, you lose life and productivity, and eventually degrade your natural capital.

We desperately need land to support a resilient agricultural sector. We need our policies to empower farmers to be the heroes we need them to be. But to do this, we are also going to need to save space for nature. And this is where science is telling us what farmers have known for generations: nature does not always come at the expense of agriculture. In fact, nature can sometimes be the best ally to farmers.
