The Urban Farming Institute of Boston (UFI) along with staff, board and the community celebrated the recent purchase of the historic Fowler Clark Epstein Farm in the heart of Mattapan. “The farm is home to us and has become a special center for our farmers and our neighbors,” said President & CEO, Pat Spence. “Fresh food is vital to a healthy community and from this place we share our bounty and teach the principles of cultivation and growth. The future of this historic place is bright because so many people gave selflessly to do more than we’d have been able to do by ourselves,” said Spence. Join UFI for the kick off of Farm Stand Fridays on June 28 from 1-5pm at the Fowler Clark Epstein Farm 487 Norfolk Street, Mattapan.

Benter is a super farmer in eGro Our best soil manager - even though the fields have been flooded most of the rainseason, and harvest failed in its normal quantity - Benter is the only to have as high a quality as last season. That′s because she has created a soil that can continue to feed the plants with nutrients, even if the fields are sometimes saturated with water. Porosity from having a good soil life, and thus structure from earth worms and microbial life, and thereby high levels of carbon, is of course the key to high evaporation from the soil. This is one part of creating a climate resilient production, since flooding is as common as drought and heatwaves in a present and future world full of extreme weather events due to climate changes.
Meet Benter. Recruited by Seba, Benter is a dedicated full-time farmer and vital member of our eGro community, having been with us for two seasons. Her attention to detail shines through her farming practices, and despite the distance of her farm, she never misses a community meeting, showcasing her diligence and dedication. Benter excels in soil sampling, water harvesting techniques, composting, and sorting. So far this season, she is the only farmer to deliver grade 1 and grade 2 quality peanuts, a testament to her meticulous care. We recently purchased 19 kg of grade 1 peanuts, 12 kg of grade 2 peanuts, along with 7 kg of pigeon pea from her farm. Not stopping at peanuts, Benter provides us with quality pigeon pea seeds and has the highest tree survival rate among all eGro farmers, nurturing species like moringa, grevillea, and whistling pine. She also crafts brooms from local grasses and adds the grass residues to her compost, enriching our ecosystem in every way possible. Watch this program. Just one of the reasons why I've joined the blue economy.
Have you heard that in Alaska, the latest “gold rush” is kelp farming?? ?? Although farming kelp on submerged ropes is new to the region, this blue food has long been a part of Indigenous diets. That’s where fisherman and Eyak tribal member Dune Lankard and his non-profit Native Conservancy come in. They’re leading the charge to make sure Indigenous people can use kelp farming to create economic opportunities and support the health of the ocean! This is especially needed in their home turf of Prince William Sound—a place once devastated by the Exxon Valdez oil spill. To hear more about how their kelp farms can be an antidote to years of extractive practices on the water, watch Episode 1 of ???????? ???? ?????? ??????????. Mark your calendars for June 19th, when it airs on PBS. #SeaweedDay #HopeInTheWaterPBS
