How Emergency Departments Play a Role in Hospital Readmissions The emergency department (ED) plays a critical role in hospital readmissions, often serving as the initial contact point for patients experiencing complications post-discharge. Dexur’s data reveals that many readmissions within 30 days originate from the ED, highlighting gaps in continuity of care such as inadequate follow-up, poor patient education, and insufficient outpatient support. Top thing on my mind this afternoon: Our area is rural. It feels like most of us grew up about 10 miles away from the nearest hospital. We also had to walk uphill to and from school but that is a different story. A new federal program, which went into effect in 2023, could potential save rural hospitals from being shut down. The catch? "The Rural Emergency Hospital program guarantees hospitals extra cash if they provide emergency and outpatient services but end inpatient care."
