ICYMI: This month we teamed up with our Lived Expertise Advisory Board to release a toolkit with steps to help organizations and lived experts build meaningful partnerships. This toolkit offers guidance for researchers, advocacy groups, non-profit organizations, government agencies and others that are interested in, or currently engaging in, meaningful community-engaged work. It presents BHHI’s guide to forming and sustaining meaningful, authentic, and effective partnerships between researchers and lived experts. In this guide, BHHI researchers and Lived Expertise Advisory Board members reflect on what they did, what worked, and what they wish had been done differently. We hope that our experience working together provides a framework for researchers, non-profit and advocacy organizations, government agencies and lived experts to collaborate toward a more just world for all. Today, as part of our Lifelong Rights Campaign, we have released the first in a series of research papers, to show that Care Experienced people currently do not have the same life outcomes as their non-Care Experienced peers. This paper focuses on one of the most commonly raised issues for 16+ Care Experienced people contacting us for advocacy: support with housing. We have set out ten recommendations which include; full implementation and prioritisation of Continuing Care, a dedicated Housing Officer for Care Experienced people, and standardised grants for leaving care and setting up a home. We asked our community to translate hope into action, and Randy Purinton's journey with his wife, Carol, exemplifies the resilience and determination needed in the face of PSP. Randy shares: "When faced with a terminal illness such as PSP, it is easy to crawl into a shell and remove hope from most thoughts. One thing Carol and I have discovered, is the human spirit can carry you through anything." Their story underscores the challenges of diagnosis and the importance of raising awareness. "Even though there is no cure or treatment other than finding out, not knowing was the worst part of our journey." Our new Think, Learn, Create Change (TLC) Native Toolkit helps build confidence in our Native youth of today to advocate for themselves, their peers and Tribal communities. This Toolkit meets the unique needs of Native youth, allowing them to bring their own ideas and put them into action. Utilizing this resource, Native youth have the opportunity to explore issues that they care about; understand critical stakeholders; develop messages and tools to help in accomplishing advocacy goals; and feel ready to take on challenges through advocacy action. The Toolkit also includes real-life examples throughout to further inform and inspire young leaders. Advocacy work allows us to address root causes that support the long-term work of our missions across the sector. For some nonprofits, advocacy is as simple as educating the public about their mission. For others, it involves developing legislators and working toward shared solutions.
