Medical science is constantly evolving

Dr. Anastassia Voronova, an associate professor in the Department of Medical Genetics at University of Alberta, and her team have shed new light on the heart-brain connection in KBG syndrome. Their findings, which were published this week in the journal “Nature Communications,” demonstrate the role of ANKRD11 as regulator of neural crest-mediated heart development and function. Voronova, a member of the KBG Foundation Scientific Advisory Board, is one of five researchers who received Seed Funding Grants from the Foundation. Born in Poland, Nowakowski is an alumni of The University of Edinburgh, where he earned his BSc and PhD in Biomedical Science. The Vilcek Foundation is awards Nowakowski a Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science - a $50,000 prize. Nowakowski receives the award for developing technologies to identify and track the regenerative capacity of neural stem cells and neural progenitor cells in the human brain. My dad has Parkinson's disease. This article puts into context (1) the replication crisis in the medical and social sciences, (2) the bad incentives that drive academic and scientific dishonesty, (3) overstating conclusions from an epistemology (i.e., empirical inquiry) that is designed to guard against the failures of logic and belief. As scientists, it behooves us to strive for quality while keeping in our minds that real people (my father) exist on the other side of our results. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) may begin when brain no longer creates mature brain cells - QUT Health study finds. QUT School of Biomedical Sciences Researchers Dr Rachel Okolicsanyi and AsProf. Larisa M Haupt Haupt and PhD candidate Martina Gyimesi have called for a rethink about the possible early cause of AD in their recently published article in Open Biology; Beyond amyloid and tau: rethinking Alzheimer’s disease through less explored avenues. The study challenges the accepted view of a build-up of amyloid proteins in the brain as the cause of the brain deterioration seen in patients with AD, and instead offers a broader, alternative view that centres on impaired adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) as a potential early causal factor. Charité - Universit?tsmedizin Berlin is looking for an intrinsically, highly motivated PhD doctorate who wants to join our exciting journey to discover and translate molecular #cardiovascular disease prevention mechanisms. Our group studies resilience mechanisms that keep individuals healthy while being exposed to a harmful environment and risk factors focusing on thrombotic and #thromboinflammatory disease. Using an innovative a cross-species approach investigating hibernating brown bears, pigs and long-term immobile patients we defined long-term immobility induced thromboprotective mechanisms. The PhD project will explore novel cellular-derived resilience mechanisms using our translational approach combining involving model organism and start of the art methodology. These findings will pave the way for innovative therapeutic approaches. New Scholar: Dr. Nathan Blue! Dr. Blue is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinician scientist at the University of Utah with a body of work on optimizing the clinical diagnosis of fetal growth restriction (FGR) and the prediction of perinatal morbidity. Unfortunately, available approaches to understand and refine the prognosis in FGR remain crude and imprecise, such that many patients unnecessarily undergo intensive monitoring and early delivery, while preventable stillbirths continue unabated in the U.S.. My goals are twofold: 1) to better understand the role of genetics in contributing to FGR and perinatal morbidity; 2) to leverage novel computational approaches, including AI, to integrate genomic and clinical data to refine risk estimation in FGR and other obstetric scenarios characterized by prognostic uncertainty.
