The University of California Office of the President is hosting its 9th workshop in a series led by the Community Engagement in Climate Action Research program tomorrow. ? The October 30th workshop will emphasize the importance of community involvement in climate action research and fostering collaborative approaches across multiple institutions and with community members. Panelists from California communities and universities will share successful approaches they've used to secure funding, build relationships, and conduct research. Participants will engage in small group discussions to explore and identify potential solutions to their challenges. ? The UC San Diego community is encouraged to participate. "From Challenges to Solutions: Community-Engaged Research Strategies," from 10 – 11:30 a.m. PT. Register Now: https://lnkd.in/g3bWm5rq

It’s quite remarkable how well the PIK markets the concept of “tipping points” as “proven,” even though both the IPCC and other scientists are intensely debating this theory. In my view, the PIK acts as if tipping points are imminent. Yet, the IPCC states “low confidence,” which does not mean that tipping points do not exist. Overall, tipping points are a brilliant concept to provide political justification for pushing through certain measures, some of which do not even address climate change but instead focus on other agendas like increasing state intervention in private life or promoting de-growth.

Climate Extremes: At the Abyss? is a compelling documentary that dives deep into the urgent question of whether our planet is at risk of crossing critical tipping points that could lead to irreversible climate change. This film features leading climate scientists, such as Johan Rockstr?m, Daniel Swain, Stefan Rahmstorf, and Samantha Burgess, who discuss the growing danger of pushing Earth into a state where it can no longer sustain life as we know it. Through expert insights and research, the documentary examines critical planetary systems like the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, ocean currents (especially the AMOC), and the Amazon Rainforest. These systems are under strain, and the film highlights the complex dynamics and potential “vicious cycle” feedbacks that could accelerate climate change if these tipping points are breached. This is a must-watch for anyone interested in understanding the risks, scientific research, and implications of our rapidly changing climate. You can share this with friends and followers to help spread awareness and deepen the public’s understanding of planetary boundaries and climate science. The short clip below is well worth a minute to really understand and value what +1.5c means. It is changing everything. Our inability to respond appropriately is a crisis of #leadership #climate #tippingpoints #collapse

NEW REPORT! Policymakers working on modern slavery and climate change are working in silos, despite the issues being interconnected - according to research led by the Rights Lab, University of Nottingham and University of Nottinhgam's School of Geography, in partnership with Transparentem and International Justice Mission UK. KEY FINDINGS: ? The research found perceived and real barriers to integrating policies on modern slavery and climate change, linked to resource and capacity strain. ? The research community should work to strengthen the evidence on benefits of climate change and modern slavery policy integration and provide tangible guidance and recommendations ? Good practice of integrated policy exists, and can be built on, for example the inclusion of decent work within Scotland and Northern Ireland’s climate change policies ? The research itself has catalysed new ideas and connections between previously isolated government departments ? The Government needs to put more effort into integrating these two policy areas to ensure effective policy-making. Watch the lead researcher Dr Bethany Jackson talk about the research and read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/e9Eq6VkD The research was funded by the Modern Slavery PEC, which in turn is funded and supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

This talk at The RSA (The royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce) looks fascinating. I'l look forward to reading Clayton Aldern's book too. In #lca circles, Social LCA (S-LCA) is an emerging field. In my last LinkedIn article, https://lnkd.in/eGSpRjTa - I wrote about how Life Cycle Assessment uses science to quantify and express environmental impact as it becomes embodied in products and services. I went on to argue that these impacts can be monetised to express clearly what the economic consequences are. Being able to recognise what economists call externalities is, for me, an essential step in creating a viable and sustainable future. Some people feel instinctively uncomfortable with reducing the phenomena that Clayton Aldern addresses to a price tag, I can appreciate that. But, we must recognise that the social-psychological consequences of environmental impact has a serious cost in economic terms too. It also helps to underline the value of what ecologists and economists call 'cultural ecosystem services'. If we know that what Clayton is talking about as being very real and important, AND we acknowledge that change happens quickest when there's a financial-economic imperative, being able to monetise them is important. However cold and unpleasant the terminology might sound.
Neuroscientist and environmental journalist Clayton Aldern joins us for a lunchtime chat on 23 April about his book, The Weight of Nature - an impassioned work of research and storytelling, documenting the emotional and physical toll of a warming climate on our minds, brains and bodies. Exciting News Alert! ?? ?? Mark Lubell's newest book, coauthored by Francesca Pia Vantaggiato, "Governing Sea-Level Rise in a Polycentric System" is now available! The book delves into how polycentric governance systems tackle new collective action problems, focusing on adaptation to sea-level rise in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Climate adaptation, like mitigation, poses challenges of coordination and cooperation due to its public good characteristics. The study utilizes the Ecology of Games framework, combining rational choice institutionalism with social network theory, to examine how policy actors address these challenges. Civil disobedience work: ???????? ???????????????????? ???????????????? ?????????????? ?????? ?????????????????????????? ???? ?????????????? ????????????!, A first (German) study (https://lnkd.in/e53R3sSx): Research shows that climate protests effectively elevate concerns about climate change, particularly in regions with low awareness levels No significant evidence supports the notion that confrontational protests have a negative impact on climate change concerns. The disruptive nature of climate protests underscores society's reliance on activists and amplifies their constructive objectives. Another recent (US) paper ( ?? https://lnkd.in/eV3j2ghQ) gives more insights in what kinds of nonviolent civil disobedience (NVCD) works and what not: Reactions to NVCD are more positive when both the target and action are perceived as appropriate. Soup-throwing and targeting museums were viewed unfavorably, possibly leading to criticism. NVCD aims to disrupt daily life and raise awareness, but broad support from diverse demographics is crucial for meaningful change in democratic societies. Post from Hans Stegeman
