Reflecting on Juneteenth: A Celebration of Progress, Strength, and Unity! “Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory or an acceptance of the way things are. It’s a celebration of progress. What does Indigenous Peoples' Day mean to me? Indigenous Peoples' Day (October 14, 20240 is a holiday that celebrates and honors the history, cultures, and contributions of my people. Its purpose is to recognize the resilience, strength, and diverse heritage of brothers and sisters from the many Indigenous communities across our nation. It offers us an opportunity to acknowledge the historical injustices and colonial impacts such as the displacement, assimilation efforts, and mistreatment of Native populations. The day serves as an opportunity to: Promote Awareness: It raises awareness about the rich histories, cultures, and traditions of Indigenous peoples, countering the often one-sided narratives taught in mainstream history. Challenge Historical Narratives: Indigenous Peoples' Day is seen as a response to Columbus Day, shifting the focus from celebrating the colonization of the Americas to honoring the people who were here long before European arrival. Celebrate Contributions: It highlights the many contributions that Indigenous peoples have made—and continue to make—to society in areas like governance, environmental stewardship, arts, and cultural practices. Support Justice and Reconciliation: The day encourages reflection on past injustices and promotes actions aimed at achieving reconciliation, justice, and equity for Indigenous communities today. Overall, Indigenous Peoples' Day is an opportunity to celebrate Indigenous cultures, advocate for Indigenous rights, and foster a greater understanding of the ongoing struggles and achievements of Indigenous communities. Many of us make it a habit of thinking only within our comfort zones. We fail to challenge our habitual ways of thinking and fall short of embracing uncertainty and discomfort that can offer us all opportunities for growth. To challenge ourselves in such a manner is equivalent to taking a risk—pushing ourselves beyond familiar routines, ideas, and environments to explore new perspectives or develop new skills. Today - Indigenous Peoples' Day gives us the opportunity to think outside the box and grow beyond it - to see the dreams, hopes, and aspirations of a people - proud, strong, and resilient.

Each year, we honour #NationalIndigenousHistoryMonth and Indigenous Peoples Day. June is an essential time of reflection for those living and working on the Indigenous lands now known as Canada and locally, the First Nations unceded territories now collectively known as British Columbia. Here are some ways the creative industries in B.C. are foregrounding Indigenous stories, taking action, and providing resources to champion a safe and equitable future for their creators and everyone in these industries. https://lnkd.in/e2-8UvGQ
