The power of teamwork is unmatched. Visually impaired runner Libby Clegg and Paralympic guide, Chris Clarke, ran wrist to wrist, perfectly synchronized, and won gold in the 100-meter and 200-meter races at the Paralympic Games in 2016. Clarke didn’t qualify for England’s national team and couldn’t compete in the 2016 Olympics, but his journey wasn’t over. He and Clegg trained for two months together so the competition would feel as natural as possible—and it paid off! We’re highlighting remarkable #womeninsports history leading up to #Paris2024. Everyone talking about the Paralympics or shared the success stories or posts over the social media, but still there are people didn’t know the difference between PO and SO:?? Misconceptions around the Olympics, the Paralympics and Special Olympics have existed..?? Quick facts about the differences between the Paralympics & Special Olympics:?? Paralympics: ? The Paralympics refers to the Paralympic Games, a multi-sport event that happens every 4-years (in both Summer and Winter cycles) ? The Paralympics are held in parallel with the Olympic Games (hence “para”) (usually about two weeks after). ? The Paralympics have specific rules around eligibility and classification for athletes based on 10 eligible impairments types. ? Athletes with disabilities who participate in para sports are Para athletes, but you are not a Paralympian until you compete at the Paralympic Games (similarly not every athlete is considered an Olympian). Special Olympics: * It refers to an organisation and sport system, not a single event. * Participating athletes have an intellectual disability. * It happens also every 4 years in both summer and winter cycles. * In this , it uses divisoning and groups athletes based on age, gender and ability and do not exclude based on performance. That's what the International Paralympic Committee said. At Channel 4 we say ALTOGETHER DIFFERENT. ParalympicsGB have written an open letter to Government insisting that disabled children have access to sport. There are 16 million disabled people in the UK and 1.5 million disabled kids in schools. All of them should have access to sport and to play. In the way they want, for them. Only 1 in 5 do. I am delighted to see us put this ad out today after we welcomed home the athletes last night in Birmingham with their wonderful 124 medals. 1,433 days until the Paralympics in LA. Now is the time for change. Let's not wait.
