Today, OhioX is proud to launch "Ohio for Computer Science" – a new initiative beginning with an open letter from over 100 CEOs and tech leaders calling on Ohio’s state leaders to give computer science opportunity to every student. Why? Because the future of Ohio’s economy depends on it. From healthcare to manufacturing, every company is now a tech company. With the rise of AI, tech education is no longer optional—it’s essential. Building Ohio into a leading tech hub requires a strong tech-focused workforce and that starts with giving every student a chance to learn computer science. Why now? This week, Code.org released their annual 2024 State of Computer Science Report. There are some alarming trends for Ohio: ? Ohio had the largest total number of schools, 147, stop offering computer science of any state in the country. ? Only 61% of Ohio high schools offer computer science. ? Ohio trails neighboring states such as Indiana (91%), West Virginia (78%), and Pennsylvania (75%). Simply put, Ohio cannot become the Silicon Heartland without the people that make it happen. Chris Berry, thanks for organizing/mobilizing on this important topic! Was cautiously optimistic when we participated in the Ohio Dept of Education’s reco on beefing up CS curriculum for Ohio high schools (2022?) Unfortunately that plan has not yet received needed funding. Hopefully, this effort will help get it prioritized in 2025 State budget! I will re-post to my network of large enterprise CIO’s. Cincinnati CIO Roundtable To the degree that a lack staffing/trained instructors is a significant factor in the reduction of schools offering CS, in SW OH, we can certainly mobilize volunteers as well as expansion of resources to train existing high school faculty The INTERalliance of Greater Cincinnati and School of Information Technology at the University of Cincinnati Hazem S.
