At last month’s Power Hour, we?chatted about how to achieve role clarity and how it helps us define our path to success.?During this session, we discussed how to have conversations with your mentors and supervisors about how to achieve personal and professional alignment. ? To continue the conversation, this month we will discuss how to?adapt to when our plans change unexpectedly, and?how to talk to our mentors about it. We will explore concepts in psychological flexibility versus avoidance and how they pertain to our experience as trainees. We will discuss how to use our newly developed skills to identify expected outcomes for particular situations, and preemptively consider alternative approaches if our first strategy doesn’t go as planned. We have to do this in our grant applications, so let’s use our back-up planning skills in our personal and professional lives too! We will also discuss factors that enable us to talk to our mentors and colleagues to ensure we feel connected with people who can help us through our challenges. ? Join us as we create space for you to de-stress in a safe environment, talk to other trainees about your experiences, and learn skills that you can take back into your personal and academic life to take control of your situation. ? De-Stress Power Hour led by Student Clinicians, in collaboration with the UAB?Master of Arts?in Counseling program and the UAB Medicine Office of Wellness. ? Trainees from all programs and departments are welcome – no faculty, staff, or administrators allowed. This is a safe space for you to connect with other trainees, spend an hour to invest in your wellness, and skill build around the monthly topic.? TL;DR: Adaptability is a skill all scientists need to master. We already know how to do this in practice - we use this skill when we write the Expected Outcomes and Alternative Approaches section of our grants! Join us on Friday to learn how to manage our day to day task lists in a similar way.

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY!! Empowering Students: Prioritizing Wellness and Time Management Returning to formal education after a long break can be overwhelming, especially for mature students. Last year, I worked with mature students who, within just a few weeks, felt the pressure of burnout and the sense of being in competition with peers who transitioned directly from high school. I often remind them, It’s not a race. Give yourself the time and space to find your own pace. Self-care and effective time management are key. After conducting a Mature Student Experience Survey and hosting Sip and Chill sessions, one common theme emerged: the need for better wellness and time management tips and tricks. These students are juggling academic, personal, and other life commitments, and they’re eager to avoid burnout by learning how to manage their time effectively and prioritize their well-being. In response, I’m thrilled that our office, the Office of the Dean of Students, Peer Wellness Education and Programs, the Spirituality and Wellness Centre, and Student Learning Services have come together to create the Balanced You Workshop. Taking place tomorrow, October 10th, at the North Campus, this workshop will focus on wellness, self-care, and time management. We’ll explore how self-care looks different for everyone, with guided meditation and practical strategies for finding balance. While this initiative is driven by feedback from mature students, we are committed to making our programs accessible to all students. This workshop is open to everyone! Join us for this incredible session and let’s get balanced together! **SEE FLYER FOR MORE DETAILS!! #StudentSuccess #Wellness #TimeManagement #MatureStudents #SelfCare #HigherEducation #Balance #Humber #humberpoly #wellness #studentsupport #studentengagement #humberpolytechnic

Employee Health and Wellness. Its been approximately one year since the Welland McMaster Family Health Team launched our ?"Health and Wellness Commitment Statement" and Policy that now provides each FHT staff member 8 Wellness hours a year to be taken when and how the staff need them.?Even though healthcare and social service workers recognize the importance of self-care, most of them are unable to adequately implement them into their schedules to maintain a proper work-life balance. WMFHT encourages our most valuable assets to implement “rest ethics” into their daily schedules to improve their wellness and recover from the impact of burnout. Dedicated Wellness hours during working hours help staff to take care of themselves, so that they can take care of their patients in the best possible way.?In the summer of 2023 we offered all Niagara primary care teams an additional e-learning summer series of workshops that all staff could voluntarily register for through our partners at Ontario CMHA YHS_e-Learning Summer Series https://lnkd.in/gHB66RWu. We believe the excellent results and feedback received from our Patient Experience Surveys have a direct correlation to Provider Wellness at the Welland McMaster Family Health Team. In early 2023 we embarked on an Interprofessional Education for Quality Improvement (I-EQUIP) https://lnkd.in/g4g2MpAE project led by Brock University and in partnership with health promoters representing the 10 Primary Care Teams (PCT) in the Greater Niagara area.?Research and evidence collected by Brock University students through surveys and interviews identified various stressors that were present within primary care teams in Niagara during and after the pandemic. The students then created a Student Project Overview and Knowledge Translation and drafted our first Health and Wellness Commitment Statement which we adopted and later turned into policy. The results are in from our year 1 staff feedback survey...and I am proud to share that 100% of the staff indicating they are Extremely or Very Likely to use wellness hours again. 100% of the staff indicated that using wellness hours Always or Often Improved their productivity at work and in their personal life. 100% of staff indicated they were Very Satisfied after using wellness hours in the first year. Finally, 80% of staff rated the importance of implementing wellness hours as Very Important. A comment left by one of the staff stated:? ??????"The days??where I used a wellness hour to be active and socialize, I had more energy in the afternoon at work and I also felt more relaxed and ready to function at home with my family responsibilities in the evening" Let's take care of ourselves, because others rely on us to take care of them. The?WMFHT?hopes by?implementing?our Policy and Health and Wellness Commitment Statement?we are spearheading this movement for others to hopefully follow. Please feel free to reach out to learn more.

What value do you place on yourself? Your professional and your personal development? Your professional development may include inhouse lectures or training, being mentored or working with a clinical supervisor. You might be fortunate to go to conferences that are free and relevant to you as a senior nurse or AHP, hopefully with a bit of lunch thrown in! Additionally, something might catch your eye that you are really interested in and will enhance your role, but you have to pay for it. You determine what you hope to learn, how you will implement your new knowledge in the workplace, and what you hope to teach others. You way up the value against the cost and make your decision. Now let’s talk about your personal development. We all have personal challenges in the workplace to some degree. You work with a plethora of different professionals so its unsurprising there are clashes of personality, gender, generations, roles or cultures. That can result in you experiencing feelings of stress, anxiety, imposter syndrome, perfectionist tendencies, or you develop excessively high expectations of yourself and others. Is this sustainable? Do you accept this as “normal” in this industry? – Ouch! You may choose to do nothing about it, or you can choose to add value to your personal development and work with me. I help female senior nurses and allied health professionals like you, manage the challenges of your working relationships, so you can reduce those stressors in the workplace. My prices start at £350 for 3 sessions, which Include x1 90-minute session and x2 60-minute sessions. This package is best suited to those of you who have some idea of the changes you want to make, and the kind of outcome you would like. For others of you who are experiencing uncertainty, or have several challenges you wish to work on, then the x6 session package priced at £650 may be more suitable, and allows us more time to make significant progress. If you would like to know more, DM me here on LinkedIn and let’s talk about what you want to achieve. Look after yourself. #professionalrelationships #seniornurse #alliedhealthprofessional #value #personaldevelopment #professionaldevelopment #coaching

?Alumni Spotlight Series? Featuring Jeffrey Ung, MS ?Why did you choose the MS-HAIL program?? I chose the MS-HAIL program for many reasons. Thoughts of returning to school always crossed my mind. I had just been promoted twice in a few years and my manager was planning on retiring in a few years. She was teaching me as much as she could during the transition period, not necessarily to groom me for the position, but at the very least, so I could help the new manager (if not me) get settled in so that the operations of my department did not miss a beat. Healthcare administration seemed to be the natural major when thinking of leadership roles at healthcare organizations like mine. I did some research and MS-HAIL seemed to offer everything I wanted in a degree; an accelerated program from a world class institution that is tailored to the working professional. I’ve since been permanently promoted to Manager of Occupational Therapy and wear several different hats that are out of my job scope. ?What was a highlight of the program while you were a student? ? I felt there were so many highlights in the program despite being in the pandemic cohort. I met so many great people who worked near and far and some of whom I maintain contact with today. If I had to pick one, I’d have to say the group work was a great experience. I cannot overlook the fact that all of us were so busy with our own careers and personal lives, yet everyone approached informal group work and group meetings like it was a job. On top of that, everyone contributed so much to discussions and hearing ideas from different points of views, things to consider based on our regions, and from our different backgrounds, it was genuinely enlightening. It truly was a motivating and humbling experience going through the adversity of an accelerated program and not feeling alone while going through it. We truly had camaraderie despite having never met in person, and I feel like Cohort 15 sort of wears this distinction like a badge of honor. ?How have you applied what you learned in this program to your career?? The first thing that comes to mind is the consideration of architecture and environment on the patient and family experience. One of the hats I wear is being the Environment of Care (EOC) chair at my hospital where I round the environment and produce a report of findings for different departments to address. I also educate others and because of what I learned in the MS-HAIL program, I can better articulate and rationalize the impact on patients and their families. I’ve also taken serious consideration of taking advantage of expanded roles when those positions are open, such as Director or VP positions. I love my job, the people I report to, and the people that report to me. I also believe in my capabilities and work ethic, so I believe what I’ve learned at UCSF has given me the skills and the confidence to transition into a larger role down the road. #UCSF #MSHAIL #AlumniSpotlight

Tracking our 'wellbeing' journey, in my last post, I shared how we flipped our Staff Meeting with a view to bring attention to the agenda of 'wellbeing' in our setting. Moving away from surface level concepts, we are starting to focus on how individual staff members define 'wellbeing' in their workplace. The simple image here of layered unravelled ‘Snowballs’ represents the complexity of creating a shared definition and understanding in our large educational setting. Whilst this might seem simple, it takes collaborative and strategic planning to consider what this looks like, sounds like and feels like. Interestingly, the metaphors that sit with one simple image can include: collection, collective ideas, unravelling, smoothing out, nested, shared thinking, voices, stacked ideas - reflecting what needs to occur for us to come to an authentic, contextual and accessible definition of wellbeing within, at and beyond our school. These individual definitions have been typed up and are ready for the next phase - at the same time, we capture anyone we missed and invite our non-teaching staff to participate as part of this whole school agenda.

Time flies when you’re having fun. And it flew at the all-day workshop I participated in last week – all the more remarkable as it was virtual. ???? The topic of discussion was how we breathe life into the Council of Deans of Health’s (2023) AHP Educator Career Framework. This important work, brought together by the fabulous Alison Chambers, promotes the education pillar of practice. It identifies anyone involved the learning and development of others as an ‘educator’. And like all pillars of practice, education (or the facilitation of learning) is everyone’s business. On that basis, the Framework outlines education-related expectations for all allied health professionals, spanning support workers and pre-registration leaners to consultant practitioners and senior academics.?? The AHP Educator Career Framework and the Multi-professional Practice-based Research Career Framework shine important lights on the details of the education and research pillars of practice respectively. ?? In doing so, they highlight the undoubtable merits of identifying the core components of practice. Having this clarity enables us to examine, understand and, importantly, learn and develop capabilities in each of them. ?? Last week's workshop got me thinking again about the four ‘pillars’ of practice, which identify and describe these core components ?? 1?? Clinical (or professional) practice; 2?? Leadership; 3?? Facilitation of learning (or education); and 4?? Evidence, research and development. We definitely DO need to be able to see them individually. But they aren’t separate, distinct and isolated. For me, they are best, and strongest, when woven together. The thing is, you can’t weave with pillars. As I’ve previously suggested, I wonder if we might do well to try to shift our thinking from ‘pillars’ towards the key ‘strands’ of practice. Would that create space for some different possibilities? ?? If we can embrace all four strands as fundamental to practice (as the phrase ‘four pillars of practice’ implies), we open ourselves to recognising the extent to which they’re inherently inter-related. As we know, individual strands of cord woven together make a much stronger rope. Similarly, weaving together the core strands of practice benefits the individuals, groups and communities we serve. I honestly believe it also helps to build satisfying and fulfilling career options, pathways, and individual careers. And what if we not only wove together the core strands of practice within our own careers? What if we wove together our collective efforts to do so? Think of the strength of the fabric we could create together. Think of the richness of that particular tapestry. Think of the difference that could make on so many levels ?? There'll be differences in the rate of growth across the strands of practice, within and between individuals. That's absolutely fine. So how can you support your own, or your team's, development across all four? ?? Document links ??
