The antipodeans Sir Ernest Rutherford "father of nuclear physics" and Sir Mark Oliphant, "Opposer of the fission bomb" were the first experimental demonstrators of nuclear fusion. Why then are the Australian Government and the Federal Opposition not working to get it developed in Australia and bring it back home? New Zealand has, so why not Australia? Is Dutton doing a Menzies and wanting a loophole to get fission (Nuclear) weapons to start with for the subs? 9. Australia still has no high-level radiation waste storage facility 10. Helion Fusion has committed to having its fusion version working in 2028 11. The FIA (Fusion Industry Association) has postulated that commercial power fusion will be available in the 2030s. 12. In its fusion conference report in 2023, the IAEA postulated that all International nuclear (Fission) Laws like the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty do not consider fusion, so it seems it can be built in Australia now. 13. Fusion is also being developed "Small Modular Fusion Reactors" like Zap Energy and Avalanche Energy. 14. HB11 and the UNSW Tokamak project have positioned Australia prominently in the trillion-dollar international fusion industry. Instead of relying on fission with a limited lifetime, wouldn't it be preferable to support Australian renewables, batteries, and hydrogen energy generators and back them up with a fusion power plant? This would eliminate the traditional waste problem while still providing medical isotopes and advancements in medical technology like MRIs. We welcome the Prime Minister's announcement of a national nuclear endeavour for our security and energy resilience, including a new nuclear skills plan with commitments to hugely expand the opportunities for people to train at?PhD level, and become our country’s future nuclear experts. ? Our own Prof Scott Heath is a member of the Nuclear Skills Task Force, and we commend him and his Task Force colleagues for helping to set out how to address the significant workforce growth needed to meet Government ambitions for the sector. ? Dalton Nuclear Institute Director Prof Zara Hodgson CEng FIChemE said: “The ambition is high across the civil and defence nuclear enterprise. A clear, collaborative plan to expand the nuclear workforce, with government, industry and academia, is just what we need to ensure we have the specialist skills where we need them, and when we need them. Been musing about early steps Texas could take to help jumpstart Advance Nuclear in Texas. If we want to see Texas become a real player, we need to get in the game. Now. Don't wait. Bringing the Texas supply base up to speed on how they can supply nuclear is no small task. The nuclear specific training and experience requirements to do this work is substantial. The commercial nuclear industry resource base has been sized to the operating reactor fleet and is not ready to support the demands of a massive wave of new builds. So Texas will need to grow their own. BUT, in collaboration with the current nuclear industry so both segments gain talent and experience. Collaboration is the only success path. Some early musings attached. Lots of ways to approach, this is but one. No idea where this goes. Just putting it out there. #OurFutureIsElectric #OFIE

Peter another great article - B-21 and LSRO have potential to be a real star relative to past aircraft acquisition programs - fingers crossed. Sentinel is another success story given the near impossible task of swapping out systems without bringing anything off alert. Bottom line anyone not planning for unforeseen hiccups is being naive or has never worked this sort of program. With 17% inflation over the last three years every procurement program is going to cost 20% more - simple finance that is not taught in DC. Lastly the SSBNs. We have religion on SSBN as an assured second strike capability. With NewSTART and NPR Force Panel experience - I have never been sanguine on the sustained invulnerability of the SSBN fleet. As a hedge we need more boats at sea and more bases to complicate adversary calculus. BUT SSBNs are grossly more expensive than ICBMs in a combined shell-game and mobile configuration. Not only are they the most expensive leg by far they always come in way over cost - Columbia is 20% over (inflation adjusted?). This will be used by the anti-nuke community to delay and reduce programs - which is how we got here - history will repeat itself AGAIN!!!

#AUKUS project continues moving forward… Recently the MIT Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering has created a course for the #AustralianSubmarineAgency, a three weeks course to cover a broad range of topics, including the basics of #NuclearReactor theory and design, operations and maintenance, safety, training, operation of #NuclearShipyards… Will this be the preamble of #Australian #NuclearPower???

This past Tuesday NIRO’s Olivia Thompson joined representatives from UK Ministry of Defence, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Destination Nuclear, Nuclear Skills Delivery Group (NSDG), and Nuclear Institute Young Generation Network at the annual Women in Nuclear UK Conference to discuss “Skills for the future and opportunities in nuclear”. The session covered the need to implement meaningful changes now, the necessity to grow a diverse workforce to meet the 24 GW by 2050 target, and what we all can do. The take-home points: - The nuclear industry must be brave to address the current skills challenges and needs to be forward thinking about future skills challenges which the net zero by 2050 target will bring. - Its vitally important to recruit individuals from diverse backgrounds, to challenge traditional job titles/descriptions to make them inclusive and relevant to today’s job seekers. - At a sectorial level, there’s lots of things currently ongoing to address skills challenges, but individuals in the sector also have a role to play. We should seek new ways to share opportunities for personal development and to start talking about our own career journeys. - We need to overcome fear of failure. Some of the interventions we may try may not be as successful as others and that’s OK. If we can be innovative around embracing new technologies in the sector, we can be innovative about embracing a diversity of people into the sector.
