"As someone who started over two decades ago with a small departmental Research Experiences for Undergraduates program and then moved to open a campus-wide office at a Hispanic Serving Institution, working on COEUR 2.0 has been an extremely validating experience. It allowed me to team up with and hear from multiple contributors who have experienced firsthand the positive impact that undergraduate research, scholarly and creative inquiry continues to have at the national level on students from diverse backgrounds, with different academic and career interests, and from the full spectrum of higher education institutions. This richness of experiences and recommendations shared by program directors, mentors, evaluators, higher administrators and students will serve to inspire not only those who are starting to develop programs at their institutions, but also the more seasoned individuals who could in turn serve as allied voices to agencies, foundations, donors, and others at the state and federal levels." Collaborative Design practice has been a constant thread throughout my career. It was such a rich experience to bring it to my Board work at Sentiers Wakefield Trails as an industry partner for the Human Centred Design Lab at Algonquin College. If you are interested in collaborating with bright young people for a semester, reach out to Jed Looker Working with the student teams was so energizing! The ideas they came up with after an intense research phase were ones we had never thought of. They worked with us with such joy and grace. It was an amazing experience. One of the impacts of this project for me personally was re-confirming my commitment to being in service of more than just humans. Design is still a central skill for me, with permaculture and ecological design taking prominence as a more wholistic practice of considering humans in their context. As with any design process, the focus is still inquiry and observation, intervention and experimentation. The questions change to centre the living world and people within their socio-ecological system. What does the forest need from us? What do we observe happening in the interconnection between people and place? What can we learn from the rhythms, cycles and behaviours of the plants, water, and animals with whom we share the trails? Being around people in an intense phase of learning reminded me to keep learning myself. Many of the students had degrees and professional experiences in a wide range of backgrounds. From them I was reminded to always keep adding to my toolkit. Systems are complex and ever changing, and so can we be!
