Accelerating transmission expansion could result in up to $490 billion in system cost savings through 2050 in highly decarbonized electricity systems. These savings are realized by providing access to a diverse set of resources often via interregional transmission. The National Transmission Planning Study—a comprehensive, multiyear partnership project between NREL, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Grid Deployment Office, and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory—shows decreased system costs in all low-carbon scenarios with accelerated transmission expansion. Short term, the savings come primarily from avoided fuel costs and then transition to savings from a reduced need for capital investment. It was a fantastic privilege to present at the 2024 California Energy Commission EPIC Symposium. We discussed how thermal storage can cut carbon pollution from California industrial processes by 84 million tons while better utilizing the electric grid, reducing curtailment, and lowering the cost of getting to 100% clean energy. How? Antora Energy’s thermal storage technology uses low market value and otherwise-curtailed renewable energy to provide 24/7 industrial heat, powering California's factories with the state's abundant wind and solar generation. What’s needed? Electricity market structures that lower the cost of decarbonization for all ratepayers, including by allowing for highly flexible assets like thermal storage to use only off-peak electricity during periods of high renewable energy production.
?? The 10th Annual EPIC Symposium starts TODAY! There’s still time to register virtually!?? ? The event is an opportunity to learn how California’s premier clean energy research fund is pioneering, deploying, & commercializing new technologies. ????? ?? ?? Attend for FREE virtually!?? ?? ICYMI: ARPA-E is investing $38M to make the nation’s power grid more robust to support American-made energy for all. DC-GRIDS projects will eliminate current barriers to widespread adoption of a multi-terminal high-voltage direct current (MT-HVDC) grid, which would more than triple the capacity of existing transmission infrastructure. If you have an innovative idea that can lead the charge toward a more resilient energy grid, submit a concept paper for DC-GRIDS today: https://bit.ly/3YTT8cf.

Was this the first example of Demand Management in the world (power station + transmission network + consumers)…and the role of demand response in the future of the electricity grid could be equally or more significant - This was the first Hydro power station in New Zealand and the Southern Hemisphere, first transmission line and first gold stamping battery (used also to power the local community)…consumers had to adjust their demand / use of electricity given the ebb and flow of power generation…Example of Demand Response used by Stephen Batstone at the Otago Energy Symposium (2025). Unprecedented electricity demand growth coupled with aggressive net-zero goals are calling for the industry to continuously innovate to deliver solutions for these competing priorities. Reliability, affordability and sustainability requirements are putting pressure on current power and electricity infrastructure. In response energy leaders are strategizing and implementing comprehensive plans to prepare for future demand and ensure the long-term sustainability of how energy is produced and distributed. At the North American Gas Forum, leaders from the power and electricity sector will convene with other industry professionals to address complex questions, including: ??What is needed to enhance resilience, support load growth, and modernize and augment the U.S. electricity grid? ??What are the key factors influencing emissions intensity in natural gas production and consumption? ??What resources, technologies and innovation will have the greatest emissions reduction impact? Join us at the North American Gas Forum in D.C., on December 2-4 and be part of these engaging conversations. ??Register today: https://hubs.ly/Q02VyRRJ0 Featuring: Edison Electric Institute, New Jersey Resources, Southwest Power Pool, Constellation

Interregional transmission, or longer transmission across planning regions, is becoming more important with increasingly extreme weather and more wind and solar being added to the power grid. But today’s system wasn’t necessarily built for this type of transmission. NREL took a fresh look at market and operating rules to identify potential changes needed to realize the full value of interregional transmission. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4aQkbHY

This E&E News story reviews the new U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report, Pathways to Commercial Liftoff, Innovative Grid Deployment, examining how advanced grid technologies can boost overall electric grid capacity without building additional transmission lines. The story features input from Daniel Brooks, vice president of integrated grid and energy systems at EPRI, who explains that for these technologies to be effective, grid operators must have confidence that they operate as expected. Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs) on both the transmission and distribution systems are a major research focus for EPRI, with white papers planned for release later this year. Much of this research is completed at EPRI’s state-of-the-art research labs. Find out more about their capabilities here. https://lnkd.in/ed5bPykn Story: https://lnkd.in/eUUffczr

Join us on Facebook Live at 9:10 a.m. PT, July 22 to discuss policy and public challenges facing the energy industry. Overcoming the obstacles to global energy transition isn’t just technological. More than any other time in history, the energy industry operates in an increasingly challenging regulatory, political, and public environment. For this energy transition to succeed, IEEE Power & Energy Society member engineers and energy professionals from across the industry and around the world will need to understand what these forces are and how to best overcome them. Shay Bahramirad - (Ph.D.) hosts the IEEE PES President Fireside Chat, joined by Gene Rodrigues and Chris Kofinis, two of the nation’s leading policy and communications experts. They will discuss what the industry and IEEE PES must know and do to successfully lead this energy transition. RSVP now to watch the discussion live when it happens: https://lnkd.in/gQD8JXPe

The Technical Knowledge Sharing report on #ReactiveTechnologies Real-Time Inertia Measurement Project in the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) has just been published. This comprehensive report confirms the presence of additional inertia in the NEM from the demand side. The findings from the project underscores the critical importance of measuring inertia in real-time to ensure the stability and reliability of the Australian power grid during the fast transition to #RE. Real-Time Inertia Measurement is a game changer for our energy future, enabling more resilient and efficient grid operations. #ARENA #DEECA #EnergyInnovation #GridStability #RE #SustainableFuture
?? Exciting News! Our “Technical Knowledge Share” report for the Inertia Measurement Project in the Australian NEM is now live and available for download on ARENA’s website! This report from University of Melbourne assess the accuracy and benefits of Reactive Technologies’ GridMetrix? inertia measurement demonstration in the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM). We conducted the ARENA-sponsored project in partnership with Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) for real-time inertia measurements, revealing an average of 26% to 38% additional inertia from load, above that provided by generation, in each region of the Australian power system, with the potential to save significant operational and investment costs, and CO2 now and into the future. ???Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/edmTcBJw
