Kenya spent nine long years in #FosterCare worried that she would never have a permanent place to call home. Thankfully, she was adopted by her aunt, Lekeitha, with help from our Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program, a signature program of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, and now she has the support and love of a #ForeverFamily. GAUTENG! The 19th October is almost here. What did people say about the Cape Town conference which sold out days before the day? It got to the heart of key areas which are so important when considering or going through the adoption process. It brought up deep emotions for me, facing fears, which was good. We need to face these and recognise there is work that needs to be done within ourselves and that it is a continuous process. It is also helpful to know what help is available when going through the process.?It was also great to connect with other people - single, married, hopeful and extended families to listen to their experiences. Who is the Arise Adoption Conference for? * People wanting to listen to the voices of South African adoptees * People considering adoption * People who have adopted but want to listen, learn and lean into more * People who are family of people who are adopted or want to adopt * People who work with children & families - educators, therapists, coaches as well as youth and community workers. We know that formal adoption is one aspect of the families in South Africa, but that often children are informally living with family and friends too - the workshops and talks are relevant to them too! Today being World Children's day I would like to appreciate the efforts towards care reform. I personally take this day to amplify the voice of the government and NGOs that support care reform by taking a personal initiative to help children trapped in children's home back to their families. Having a set period of time where children's home in kenya have been given to transit, I call upon all the children's home owners, managers and social workers to embrace it and help in supporting the kids while at home. I ask them today not to be rigid if they truly work for the benefit and interest of the children. I also call upon children officers ,child protection officers, parents and caregivers to be ready to make the process easy. The government officials should be in the forefront to support this initiative and not make it bumpy... Some Orphanages are very rigid even when parents are willing to take their kids back ...this shouldn't be the case, care reform highlights a proper strategy on how the process works. All in all, PARENTS HAVE ALL THE RIGHTS TO CUSTODY OF THEIR CHILDREN. Parents- no matter the difficulties in life, Kindly do not allow them to make you separated with your children, let the support come and assist the child while he or she is with you in the family ?? At the bottom line is children need parental love and care, it's our duty to ensure we work for the best interest of the child. #Dhahabu #Carereform

??????? ???? ??????? ? This is how our weekends are spent when we have a mission bigger than us driving us_ strategizing! Our initiative geared towards fostering emotional wellbeing of children living in orphanages will kick off in 3 phases: Firstly, I would author a book that would serve as a soothing message of resilience, hope, and limitless possibilities. This masterpiece would be given to every Nigerian child (aged 12-17 years) living in an orphanage, totally free. Secondly, our organization would enlist volunteer counselors and assign them to orphanages. This would ensure that the caregivers know who to talk to when they notice a child is exhibiting symptoms of emotional and behavioral difficulties. Thirdly, we would partner with other NGOs who train youths to bring these empowerment programs to teenagers living in orphanages. This component was added because when we exert ourselves in meaningful and productive pursuits, it boosts our self-efficacy and self-esteem. It gives us the permission to look beyond our present circumstances towards a future of endless possibilities! This is just the beginning! Beyond the government, what can you and I do to make living more comfortable for vulnerable individuals? #DataDrivenChange #ResearchToAction #DataScienceForSocialGood #EvidenceBasedImpact #ChildrensWellbeing #DataMeetsMentalHealth

Here's an excellent example of the power of budget work.
??The Family Caregiving Programme is launching a new report: Older Persons, Care Needs and Social Grants in South Africa. The report explores how the grant gets transformed into meeting the needs of older persons. Building on our earlier work on Funding Elder Care, this report draws on national statistics and new qualitative findings with 80 families in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal to consider the care practices, care needs and the reach of the Older Person Grant. The findings highlight both the contributions the grants make to support older persons and their households, but we also draw attention to how it falls short and what gets sacrificed when cutting back is essential. The media brief and infographics are available in isiXhosa, Afrikaans and isiZulu, DM us for access! Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/dvfFTBsi #olderpersons?#familycaregivingprogram?#southafrica?#OPG?#socialgrants?#care

Today is #InternationalDayofCareAndSupport Care work is the foundation for families, communities, and economies, yet it is often undervalued or invisible. Without care work, societies cannot function, but this essential contribution is frequently excluded from economic planning and decision-making. Recognizing, redistributing, and valuing care work can promote more balanced societies, where both men and women engage equally in caregiving and personal development. This requires: ?? Policies promoting family-friendly practices and supportive work environments. ?? Education to shift societal attitudes toward shared caregiving responsibilities. ?? Policies that recognize unpaid care work. ?? Awareness campaigns to encourage men’s participation in caregiving Uganda Women's Network (UWONET)

I came across this impactful post from the Global Parenting Initiative and felt compelled to share the message about the transformative power of parenting interventions. These programmes are essential for fostering positive engagement and responsive caregiving, equipping parents and caregivers with the skills they need to build strong, loving relationships with their children. During my research in Peru during the pandemic, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact of playful pedagogies shared by teachers with parents. These interactive and engaging methods not only enhanced learning but also created joyful, nurturing environments that were crucial for child development. This experience suggests that incorporating playful pedagogies into parenting strategies could be a valuable approach going forward. Empowering caregivers to connect deeply with their children is not just a personal victory; it's a societal one. Let’s continue to advocate for and implement these vital programmes, ensuring every parent has the support they need to thrive and every child can grow up in a loving, supportive environment. #Parenting #Empowerment #GlobalParentInitiative #StrongFamilies #PositiveEngagement #PlayfulParenting #ResearchInAction #Peru #PandemicResilience
?????? “I think I am going to be a good father because I learned to control my temper while disciplining.” A father from Uganda reflects on the transformative power of parenting interventions. These programmes are essential for fostering positive engagement and responsive caregiving. Empower fathers and all caregivers with the skills they need to build strong, loving relationships with their children. Together with partners, we call on governments, businesses, and other stakeholders to scale up parenting programmes with an enabling environment for playful parenting. We’re excited to announce the launch of the Phase 2 Tunaswasi 'We Are Thriving' project! Tunaswasi means "We Are Thriving," and is transforming the lives of children and young people (15+) with cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities in Uganda. Our mission is to ensure they have access to healthcare, assistive equipment, and the support they need. Why Tunaswasi Matters Cerebral palsy is a common childhood disability in low-income countries like Uganda. Limited healthcare, lack of understanding, and stigma often leave these children hidden away, isolated, and neglected. Caregivers struggle, while mothers often face abandonment, discrimination, and poverty. How Tunaswasi is Making a Difference We’re addressing these challenges through: ??Building Strong Communities: Parent Support Groups bring caregivers together to learn, share experiences, and advocate for their children's needs. ??Economic Empowerment: We’re fostering self-sufficiency through community-driven savings and loan groups that help members borrow money to start businesses, such as poultry rearing or farming. ??Aiding Mobility & Independence: Children and young people are assessed and provided with the right equipment—like wheelchairs and walking aids—to help them move independently and live fuller lives. ??Better Local Clinical Care: Local healthcare professionals and community workers are trained to provide appropriate care and support, ensuring every child and young person receives the best possible assistance. Meet Noor Noor is a six-year-old girl with cerebral palsy. Before joining the Parent Support Group, her mother felt overwhelmed—Noor often cried, refused to eat, and faced community insults. Now, thanks to Tunaswasi, things have changed: "We've made new friends. I no longer feel alone, and I finally have the support and guidance to care for my daughter, to nourish her in ways I didn’t know were possible..." The Road Ahead Tunaswasi is led by our team of Clinical and Technical Specialists in Uganda, with support from Motivation’s regional office in Kenya and our UK team. Our partners and funders have made this work possible—thank you for your support and generosity. Together, we are ensuring children like Noor are not just surviving, but thriving. #DisabilityRights #CerebralPalsy #InclusiveWorld #DisabilityInclusion #MakeaDifference #ChangeMakers #MakeSpaceforDisability #DisabilityAwareness
