In the days and months to come, there will be many posts surrounding the devastation following Hurricane Helene and it will become readily apparent that people want to help - need to help. Please Please be careful. Disaster fraud is real and there are bad actors out there who will take advantage of this. Before you donate, please do your research. The American Red Cross is always your safest bet, HOWEVER, there are plenty of other folks out there on the ground that need your help to get aid to the ones that need it - just make sure they are legit. According to the FTC, you can check on give.org, charitynavigator.org, charitywatch.org or guidestar.org.

It's much worse than what we are seeing on TV. What's worse, many of the legacy non-profits are not providing the services and resources that they should be ... it's hard to know who to trust to send your money to to help the suffering. You can use Charity Navigator to find a non-profit that is honestly using the funds received for the benefit of those it's intended for and not to fund fat salaries and fat operations. If you are reading this, I hope you'll find the desire to give to the victims of Helene.

Wildfire is here to help. Governor Hobbs' order also directed state agencies to develop a comprehensive heat plan by March 2024 and advocate for more federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funding. As a community action agency that connects low-income households with resources, Wildfire will do everything we can to support Governor Hobbs bringing more LIHEAP money into the state. "The program was initially designed to help cold-weather communities keep residents heated in the winter, but it has evolved to become an important resource for air conditioning assistance in hot summers, said Wildfire Executive Director, Kelly McGowan. Wildfire will match community donations up to $500,000 in donations to repair and replace HVAC units for qualifying low-income individuals at no cost to them -- bringing the total raise to $1,000,000. The more we are able to raise in donations, the greater the impact we can make.
