Science Writer for Bilingual Kids Science Podcasts Tumble Media is looking for experienced science writers to work on a National Science Foundation-funded series of Tumble Science Podcast for Kids and its adaptation, Tumble en Espa?ol. This exciting opportunity is part of a study exploring how bilingual STEM podcasts can strengthen science identity in US Latine families through family science talk. Research suggests that STEM identities can be strengthened by talking about science with families from an early age. This project will create 17 culturally-situated episodes over the course of three years, written in English and adapted into LatAm Spanish. This contract writer position will be responsible for creating original content highlighting stories of science discovery that are interesting and relevant to Latine youth audiences. They will research and pitch ideas for episodes featuring Latine scientists, interview and write scripts in English for 15-20 minute podcast episodes for kids, all with careful consideration of Tumble’s editorial standards, style, and voice. The ideal candidate is able to write from a place of authenticity about the experiences and interests of US Latine families, and bring that perspective to a collaborative editing process. This project is unique because it will integrate feedback from a parallel research process; incorporating cultural advisors, Latine kids and families, and research surveys. Experience: - Experience communicating science for children aged 5-12 - Experience creating content for US Latine audiences - Experience writing science-focused podcast scripts - Minimum of 2 years of professional audio experience - Ability to record high quality audio in a remote interview setting - Experience writing in the voice of established co-hosts Required Skills/Abilities: - Ability to work as part of a team to integrate science and cultural representation - Excellent communication skills in English, working knowledge of Spanish - Comfortable working on deadline with reasonable turnaround times - Creative thinking in science storytelling - Coordinating interviews Roles and Responsibilities - Pitch science stories that are relevant to kids - Identify scientists that represent diverse Latine and science backgrounds - Work with editors to determine story approach - Draft interview questions - Interview selected scientists in English, and when applicable, in Spanish - Write script drafts that mix interview tape with host dialogue - Join in editorial meetings and incorporate feedback from editors and advisors in revision process - Review Spanish adaptation of script Timing: Position starts in November 2024. I penned this writeup to encourage and motivate the individuals who want to become story writers to debunk the ideology that one needs to study Creative Writing, English Language, Journalism and Mass Communication or anything related to writing before delving into penning their thoughts out as stories as those courses just aid the graduates in becoming excellent writers. Writing is a gift and a talent as well as a skill, a gift in the sense that God gave it to some people that even if they are sleeping, they can come up with plots and even remember it if they are not with any writing material and a talent as well as a skill if the person becomes consistent in it. The majority of individuals think one has to learn how to write or have read many books to write stories. Truth be told, reading helps in the aspect of getting inspiration, trying to establish your style and having to learn vocabularies, but what if I told you, reading is not that necessary for writing stories because as a story writer (this I mostly do than the other areas of writing I do), I rarely read except the books that piqued my interest. I have come across many individuals whose educational backgrounds are not even in Arts that are excellent story writers. History is the connection between the past, present and future and how it relates and affects society. My favorite courses are in the Arts; History, Mass Communication, Journalism, Film Studies, and Linguistics. By educational background, I am a Social and Behavioral Scientist but by passions, skills and talents, I am an artist; visual, linguistic and literary. I started with linguistics, Arabic and French being the first two languages I learned before delving into writing scripts and short stories. Although I consider myself to be very good in languages because I know six languages to some extent but my eloquence and abilities in them vary. Social and Behavioral Science discipline deals with the interaction of individuals and their behaviors within society. While undergoing my educational sojourn as an undergraduate student and graduate; Master's degree Social and Behavioral Science student, I learned critical thinking and many theories which are the bedrock of the discipline. I love to apply theoretical frameworks to issues rather than practicality.

Things to watch out for when hiring a fiction developmental editor ?? This market’s unregulated, and unlike academic developmental editing, there’s no credentialling system like academia to reinforce an editor's authority or create (at least the illusion of) boundaries to entry. (There is a great, comprehensive training program now, though, thanks to Club Ed Freelancers). Add to that … ?? A lot of aspiration around publishing ?? Fiction can look simple to edit to the untrained eye And you have to be careful here! What to watch out for: 1) Boilerplate reports: when you hire an editor, you’re hiring them specifically for feedback on YOUR story. You can pick up a lesson in fiction craft much more cheaply. There are loads of fiction craft blogs and books out there. Sure, being directed to the relevant ones for you is helpful, but the feedback you receive should be tailored to your story and writing context. 2) Prescriptive approaches: Some editors confidently tell you a story template (e.g., the hero’s journey or Save the Cat) and tailor their advice on plot and pacing to that model. If you planned to use that model, that’s okay. But this kind of prescriptive story advice isn’t sensitive to context. Telling the author the inciting incident has happened far too late is not always the best advice, and it can cause harm by squashing organic stories into fixed templates. There’s another extreme, too – an editor just telling you that stories are subjective and not offering any actionable feedback (e.g., they only give praise comments). 3)?Are services comparable? Many developmental editors define their services differently, so if you’re comparing services, make sure you’re comparing like for like. How many read throughs? How will they comment and give feedback? 4) Very long reports (say, forty pages for a regular novel) Okay, this is a contentious one. Some highly experienced editors like to write very long reports, but there are some red flags here. ? a report based on boilerplate descriptions of fiction craft points (especially in the age of ChatGPT) ? the danger of author overwhelm (in a revision round, it’s difficult to solve more than three to five story problems) ? waffling (there’s a danger the author is left unsure which parts of the report are the most important) ? an inexperienced editor trying to provide as much value as possible through quantity rather than insights. I enjoyed this article by Nathalie Schriefer about the merits of hiring a generalist academic editor. She notes, "generalists can make particularly effective editors. Why? Because they’re not familiar with the content they edit and can easily see what’s missing. That could include a vague abstract, missing context in a literature review or methodology that needs further explanation." There are pros and cons to hiring an editor who is familiar with your subject matter. But it is true that knowing too much can make editors overlook areas that might be unclear for readers who don't have such specific knowledge. When you are deciding whether to work with an editor who overlaps with your subject matter (perhaps having a PhD and conducting research in a similar area) or someone who is less closely related to your work, think about your goals for your book. If you are trying to reach multiple audiences, including students, someone who is a bit more of a generalist could be a good match as they may be more easily able to put on the hat of readers who are less familiar with the topic. That said, specialist editors can often do this too. The trick when hiring editors is to ask them about their background and approaches to editing. And be sure to share your goals for your manuscript and talk about how they can support them. And whether you work with an editor or not, it's great to have multiple readers for your manuscripts. These likely will include specialists whose subject-matter knowledge overlaps with yours, but also invite readers from other disciplines or groups to engage with your work.
