https://lnkd.in/gbPgYviX Go New York! Glad to see that a dangerous and capacity constrained signalized intersection on a State Highway is going to be changed into a roundabout. On a different note, I heard that Washington state has more roundabouts than California. Why is that? Washington has severe congestion issues and narrow roadways. California, let's get our act together. #asce # civil engineering #transportation planning #trafficengineering

On April 21, 1856, the first railway bridge over the Mississippi River was completed, marking a significant milestone in the enhancement of connectivity across the United States. This engineering feat was achieved with the completion of the Rock Island Bridge, which linked the cities of Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa. The bridge was designed by the renowned civil engineer John A. Roebling, who later became famous for his work on the Brooklyn Bridge. The construction of the Rock Island Bridge was a response to the growing demand for efficient transportation routes that could connect the eastern and western parts of the nation. Prior to its completion, the Mississippi River posed a formidable obstacle for rail transport, with goods and passengers having to be ferried across the river, which was time-consuming and costly. The bridge itself was a marvel of 19th-century engineering, featuring a span that allowed for the passage of both railway and vehicular traffic. Its completion significantly reduced travel time and encouraged economic growth by facilitating the movement of goods and people. This bridge not only represented a pivotal advancement in transportation infrastructure but also symbolized the burgeoning industrialization and expansion in America during that era. The opening of the Rock Island Bridge was not without controversy, as it faced opposition from steamboat operators who feared it would impede river traffic. The legal battles that ensued eventually led to the landmark Supreme Court case of 'The Effie Afton', which upheld the legality of the bridge and set a precedent for future infrastructural developments across the nation. In summary, the completion of the first railway bridge over the Mississippi River was more than just an architectural achievement; it was a catalyst for progress that underscored the importance of connectivity in fostering economic and social transformation in the United States. #milestonesinhistory #railwayhistory #JohnARoebling #RockIslandBridge #MississippiRiverInnovation #IndustrialAdvancement #SupremeCourtLandmark #EconomicExpansion

??? Exploring the Impact of AB 1356: The California Complete Streets Act of 2008 AB 1356 marks a significant milestone in California's approach to transportation infrastructure. This legislation, born from a recognition of the diverse needs of road users, mandates that transportation planners and engineers consider the requirements of all stakeholders – pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and transit users – when designing and implementing transportation projects. By embracing the principles of Complete Streets, AB 1356 aims to enhance safety, accessibility, and sustainability across California's urban and suburban landscapes. Through the incorporation of features such as sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks, and transit stops, this legislation seeks to create roadways that accommodate a variety of transportation modes and promote community well-being. Over the past decade, AB 1356 has spurred a shift in how transportation projects are conceived and executed, prioritizing inclusivity and multi-modal connectivity. By fostering environments where people can move safely and efficiently, regardless of their chosen mode of transport, Complete Streets contribute to improved public health, economic vitality, and environmental quality. The Urban Crossroads multidisciplinary approach is responsive to AB 1356 and provides context-sensitive design guidance related to the integration of land use and transportation strategies that ensure the reduction of vehicle emissions by residents, employees, and patrons. If true, this is a good decision. Move on from that please and reinstate HS2 up to Manchester and beyond, and link it to an upgraded TransPennine line. How can U.K. consider itself to be a modern European country without a functioning high speed rail network.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves is poised to give the green light to the extension of the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project up to London Euston and the development of the station itself Full story:
Government tipped to green light HS2 Euston development in Autumn Budget

Work is advancing around the clock on the I-5 North County Enhancements (NCE) project in Santa Clarita, California.?Pictured below are our crews placing LCB (Lean Concrete Base) on Class III Aggregate Base on the widened southbound I-5 between Gavin Canyon Undercrossing and Weldon Canyon Overcrossing.?After completing this activity, the team will install Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement (JPCP), a durable and long-lasting rigid pavement ideal for California freeways. Designed for warm climates, JPCP uses longitudinal and transverse joints to control cracking. Covering 17 miles between SR-14 and Parker Road, this LA Metro project will enhance travel with: ? New HOV lanes in both directions ? Northbound and southbound truck lanes to ease congestion ? Bridge reconstruction, barrier walls, advanced ITS tech, and much more Our client, LA Metro together with Caltrans District 7, initiated this project to relieve congestion and traffic back-ups as a result of the tremendous growth that Santa Clarita has experienced.?Today, it is the third-largest city by population in Los Angeles County. We are proud to be transforming the I-5 for smoother, safer travel—delivering progress one milestone at a time. The project is 67% complete and on track for substantial completion by July 2026. ?? Shoutout to our hardworking team and partners for making this happen!?And a big thank you to David Pressly for sharing the wonderful video footage. #OHLAUSA #ConstructionLife #InfrastructureMatters #I5Transformation #BuildingfortheFuture #HeavyCivil #WeAreOHLA #WeBuildExcellence

I talk a lot about keeping good roads in good shape. Younger cities with younger infrastructure will have a lot of roads that are contenders for this type of strategy. Well, what about cities with older infrastructure? What can they do? Well, Holbrook Asphalt Company started working with Goodyear back in 2014. They've experienced rapid growth over the past decade and recognized that pavement preservation is imperative to a well-maintained infrastructure. Arizona's intense sunlight and monsoon seasons can lead to UV and moisture intrusion into the asphalt. As roads age, the intrusion causes them to lose the oils that keep the asphalt binder from degrading, which can lead to cracking, water intrusion, and potential failure of the base. Now, Goodyear utilizes various pavement preservation tools like chip seals, slurries, and HA5 High Density Mineral Bond to extend the life of their roadways. But as roads age, they move closer to the stage where other interventions are required. Because Goodyear's infrastructure is older, they have had to do more mill and overlays than they would like to. Mill and overlays aren't ideal, but they do eventually become necessary in the lifecycle of the road. Because Goodyear has a pavement preservation strategy, they have recognized that when they mill and overlay or do a full reconstruction, they need to start preserving their roadways immediately. So, they prioritize the preservation of their best streets first, which allows them to extend the life of those roads. Extending the life of their roads ultimately allows them to use funds that would have gone towards more expensive, later-life treatments on roads that they may not have been able to get to otherwise. Goodyear is a great case study for cities with aging networks looking to get ahead of their major maintenance costs. #pavementpreservation #publicworks #goodyear #arizona #engineering #infrastructure #innovation
