Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center unveiled a new name for a decades-old program recently. The Nadine and Tom Craddick Physician Assistant Studies Program honors Rep. Tom Craddick and his wife Nadine, who have been instrumental in starting and maintaining the program. During the 86th legislative session in 2019, Craddick helped secure $20 million in state funding that enabled the TTUHSC School of Health Professions Physician Assistant Studies Program to undertake a $30 million expansion completed in 2022. TTHSC President Lori Rice-Spearman, Ph.D., said these state-of-the-art spaces ensure the university is equipped to train the next generation of physician assistants in West Texas.

We sat down recently with Dr. Tracey Hermanstyne, Assistant Dean of Academic Pathway Programs at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, to discuss Washington University in St. Louis's ongoing partnership with College Bound St. Louis. Dr. Hermanstyne also told us about a new program she is co-launching called PRIME. This program, which will be launched in collaboration with McCluer North High School and St. Louis Integrated Health Network, will bring local high school students to WashU over the summer to learn more about clinical specialties. #InSTLforSTL

This is what HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences is about: collaboration, exploration, respect for each other, and fun. Health science divisions need to build up interprofessional activities among all our professions. Starting these activities from the onset of our students’ training, will allow for students to respect each others chosen profession and understand that they WILL work together once out in the field. Because ultimately, the end goal is positive patient outcomes. We achieve this by working together as a collaborative healthcare team. With its vote on February 13, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents authorized The University of Georgia to establish a new independent School of Medicine in Athens. The initiation of a school of medicine at Georgia’s flagship university comes at a time when the state faces a significant shortage of medical professionals. In recent years, Georgia’s population has surged to approximately 11 million residents, straining existing medical infrastructure and resulting in longer wait times for appointments and reduced access to care. Georgia—the nation’s eighth largest state—is forecasted to experience further population growth in the coming years, while nearly one-third of the state’s physicians are nearing retirement. medicine.uga.edu/
