Making a Difference Without Losing Your Way Imagine you're part of a team that helps people, plants trees, and Improves neighborhood recreational spaces. Imagine some friends want to help you by giving you money, but they also tell you exactly how to spend it. One friend says, "You can only use it to plant apple trees," even if you know some places need playgrounds more than apple trees. What do you do? This is a bit like what happens in the world of non-profit organizations, where some people give money with specific instructions on what to do with it. These are most commonly known as “restricted grants” or “traditional philanthropy” Funding that comes with [restrictions] determined by the donor. Another way of helping, is where friends trust [you] to know the best way to use the money. They say, "We believe you know what's best for making your neighborhoods happy," and they let you decide whether to plant trees, build playgrounds, or maybe even start a community garden. This is commonly known as “trust-based” philanthropy. Funding that trusts that the recipient knows best how to use the money. Then there is the fact that the excitement of getting help can sometimes make teams try to do too much, like trying to plant trees, build playgrounds, and start gardens all at once, without having enough hands to do it all. This can make it hard to do any one thing really well. Whether you've never heard about this world of helping others before, or you're a leader looking for the best way to help, I'd love to hear your thoughts: - How would you decide where to use the help you're given? - What's the best way to make sure you dont lose sight of your main goal when that may not be the same goal as the donor? -How would you keep your focus and make the biggest difference in your neighborhoods? Marybeth Campbell of Worcester Community Action Council, Inc. and I are having these conversations and more l on “The Ripple Effect” podcast. Listen??Like ?? A Year of Giving: Investing in Our Roots. As I reflect on 2024, and its plans, one thing stands out prominently – a commitment to giving back to the society that shaped me. It's not just about donations; it's about meaningful charity, a purposeful investment in the community that nurtured my journey. This year, a special focus lies on my alma mater, my old school. It's more than just a building; it's the cornerstone of my foundation, the place that laid the stepping stones for my aspirations. Now, it's time to give back, recognizing the profound impact it had on shaping who I am today. Charity, to me, is not a mere transaction; it's a heartfelt expression of gratitude. It's about creating opportunities, supporting dreams, and being a part of something larger than ourselves. In times like these, where the world is evolving rapidly, the need of the hour is to uplift the very institutions that contributed to our growth. It's about ensuring that the generations following us have access to the same or even better opportunities. So, why am I doing more of this in 2024? Because investing in our roots is not just a responsibility; it's a privilege. It's an investment in the future, a small step to create a ripple effect of positive change. Here's the takeaway: if you've ever pondered on giving back, start with what's close to your heart. It could be your school, Collage, a local organization, or any cause that resonates with you. Small actions can lead to significant impacts. Let's inspire each other to make 2024 a year of meaningful giving, contributing to the society that brought us up. Together, let's make 2024 a year not just of personal growth but also of collective impact. #givingback #givingbacktothecommunity #wealthcreation #wealthmanagement #personalgrowth #creatingopportunities

One of the greatest #challenges to our work is the concept of #NIMBY -- Not In My Back Yard. It generally points to a #hesitancy or #prohibition to develop certain businesses, organizations or programs in particular areas or neighborhoods. But what if we flipped the acronym on its head and consider it instead to mean Nonprofits In My Back Yard... I often have the #opportunity to speak to #civic and #community organizations about our work. I don't take these speaking #engagements lightly. I know these gatherings are often where #decision-makers and community #leaders convene. On these occasions I have a few precious #moments to champion #nonprofits, #social enterprise and community development to a captive audience. In my most recent talk, I reframed #NIMBY to this new audience and challenged them to consider giving the 5 #T's of #Time, #Talent, #Treasure, #Ties and #Testimonies to organizations in their community. Today, I challenge us to consider how we might invest the five T's to #nonprofits in our back yard: #Time. Time is arguably our most precious commodity. We can't get more of it and we all have equal amounts within a given day. It is #valuable and our #nonprofits need it. Where can we increase our #investment of time with a nonprofit? #Talents. We all have experience, gifts, and skills to offer. Where can we use our talents to better our community through #partnership with a nonprofit? #Treasure. All of us have unique opportunities to invest in our local community through #monetary #donations. What nonprofits do we currently support and how do we better #steward our #resources to contribute our treasure to a nonprofit or two? #Ties. Where are we #connected and how can we use those ties and connections to help benefit a nonprofit? #Testimony. Stories of our own experiences are #powerful and #impactful. How has an arts organization, youth center, food pantry or sports program impacted us? Testimonies of how nonprofits have met needs or altered our path in life are powerful indicators of the value of nonprofits in our communities. Take the five T's #challenge and consider how nonprofits in your back yard can benefit from your time, talent, treasure, ties and testimony. Starting a nonprofit is the easy part…
It’s remarkably easy to start on nonprofit. Here is the U.S. our government gives out 501c3 certification like the Easter Bunny gives out jelly beans - not a very rigorous process from the outside looking in. BUT SHOULD YOU??? For the past seven years my team has “met” close to 25,000 board and staff leaders through our online membership site. We have resourced them and offered them a supportive community (nonprofitleadershiplab.com) and MANY are leaders of very early stage nonprofits. In helping them to build and grow, we hear so many different origin stories about their WHY. Some folks have done all the due diligence; many not so much. It is no small undertaking and you can never forget that once you get going, you will be entrusted with donations from individuals and foundations who are putting their trust in your vision and your ability to execute it. Here are some of the things you really need to dig deep and think about before you file that 501c3 application and before you can confidently feel you can be trusted to do right by any donation you receive. #nonprofitleadership, #501c3, #nonprofitstartup, #social impact, # leadership

?? Integration, Integration, Integration! ?? In the nonprofit world, the power of strategic philanthropy, especially through planned giving, is immense. It’s not just a standalone effort—it should seamlessly blend with your existing fundraising initiatives to enhance both immediate and long-term goals. Throughout my career, I've been dedicated to integrating planned giving into daily operations of organizations, ensuring that it complements and strengthens existing efforts rather than standing apart. This approach simplifies processes and maximizes impact, creating sustainable futures and deepening connections. If you're looking to explore how planned giving can be integrated into your current fundraising strategies or if you're curious about the potential it holds for your organization, I’d love to share insights and learn from your experiences. #Nonprofit #PlannedGiving #Philanthropy #FundraisingIntegration #SustainableImpact #CommunityBuilding

We are excited to introduce Scott Bucko, our talented Senior Managing Consultant at AmPhil! With over 25 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, Scott brings a wealth of expertise and passion to our team. Scott has successfully spearheaded major campaigns at UPenn, Drexel, and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. His diverse experience in education, real estate, and owning a bookstore brings a unique perspective to nonprofit strategy and fundraising. Q: What inspired you to start working with nonprofits? A: I’ve always been inspired by the idea of meeting needs where you see them and the concept of subsidiarity, the fancy term for addressing needs through the most local level of human community. This is what nonprofits and charities do in countless ways – from food pantries to arts groups, and schools to hospitals. I’m drawn to meeting fundamental human needs, and I believe strong, well-funded nonprofits are a primary means for doing that. Q: What’s your favorite success story that you’ve been a part of? A: There are many, but the one that comes to mind is helping a nearly 900-year-old monastic community introduce themselves to potential partners. Seeing new people inspired to step up with generosity was deeply rewarding. This visionary religious group is executing one of the most unique building projects in the world. I think of all the people like me who have helped their forebears over the centuries – I’m playing my little role just as they did. Q: Favorite aspect of company culture? A: That we know who we are as a company. We understand the values that shape the way we serve our clients. I appreciate that I work for a company that has taken the time to articulate its mission, core values, and character traits. Q: What are some good books or articles that you’ve read recently? A: I recently read “Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen” by Donald Miller. At AmPhil, we’re big on helping our clients build meaningful relationships with donors and this book was helpful in that regard. Donors are people with aspirations, needs, and goals. Mission-driven organizations need to extend an invitation to people where those things can be meaningfully met. #employee #employeeappreciation #nonprofit #consulting #companyculture #team #leadership

How My Nonprofit Journey Led to Empowering Founders Like You . Hi, I'm Vannessa, Founder of the Nonprofit Founders’ Club. My love for nonprofits and my passion for helping others brought me to this journey over 37 years ago. When I first started my nonprofit back in 1987, I was driven by a vision to create a lasting impact. But I also faced countless challenges—from navigating complex paperwork to figuring out how to secure funding. After years of trial, error, and persistence, I grew my nonprofit into a powerful force, raising over $35 million in funding to support my mission. I learned firsthand the tools, strategies, and techniques necessary to build, launch, and sustain a successful nonprofit. But my true passion? Sharing what I’ve learned with people like you—new and aspiring nonprofit founders who want to make a difference but don’t know where to start. That's why I created Concept to Funding, a 4-week intensive step by step hands on program focused on helping aspiring passionate indiviudals obtain their 501 (c) (3) nonprofit status. If I knew back then what I know now, I could’ve saved myself so much time and frustration. Now, I want to share those secrets with you! ?? Ready to skip the guesswork and start your nonprofit journey the right way? Join me in my upcoming masterclass and learn the exact steps I wish I had known earlier.
