Survey Results Are In! ??? At Illinois Joining Forces, we surveyed nearly 300 Veterans to find out how they prefer to be honored. Surprisingly, 73% of Veterans are neutral or prefer not to be personally thanked for their service. Veterans told us they value action over words! ?? One of the most challenging parts of leaving the military isn’t just stepping into a new world it’s the shift in identity, purpose, and routine. After years of service, where we knew exactly who we were and what we were there to do, the transition to civilian life can feel like a free fall. I’ve seen it time and again veterans struggling with the loss of structure that once defined them. The uniform comes off, and often, so do the routines that keep us grounded. The daily PT, the clear orders, the purpose-built into everyday All of it is just...gone. But here’s what doesn’t get talked about enough you are not your service. Reclaiming that identity means sitting down with yourself and asking the hard questions: Who am I without the uniform? What resonates with me? What do I want to do? It’s uncomfortable but necessary. Rediscovering yourself outside the rank and routine is the key to finding a new purpose on your terms. To my fellow veterans: remember that the discipline, resilience, and commitment you built don’t disappear with the uniform. The purpose is still there; It just needs to be uncovered and reignited. During the transition, time becomes a major adversary for many soldiers. It's alarming how often we, as leaders, fail to adequately prepare them for life beyond the service. For years, we've largely ignored the potential of social media, especially in combat situations. Now, soldiers are thrust into intensive three-day programs to learn entirely new systems, which is far from ideal. So, how do we fix this? It starts with us, the veterans. If you've been in the service and know someone who's about to leave or has already left, reach out. Share your own experiences—the good, the bad, and the ugly. The military instills a profound sense of camaraderie—an unbreakable bond formed through shared hardships and a deep commitment to a mission bigger than yourself. In the business world, replicating that kind of trust can be difficult. There’s hardly a structured environment to cultivate mutual purpose, no clear marker that we’re all in this together. Promises are sometimes made without intent to follow through, and it's not always obvious who is truly dedicated to the mission. As a veteran, you more than likely understand that when you shake someone's hand, look them in the eye, and say something, you mean it—and you follow through. Your word is everything. You know what it means to sacrifice everything for the mission at hand, to give more than what is asked, and to stand by your commitments no matter the cost. Today, I thank all veterans who have served—those who gave everything for the greater good, for the mission, and for their brothers and sisters in arms. Your sacrifice, integrity, and loyalty are unmatched, and the world needs more of that in every arena. To my fellow veterans: let’s continue to lead with purpose, integrity, and the unwavering commitment that defines us. Veterans Day is to recognize those that served and are still living (like me). Memorial Day is a day to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Armed Forces Day celebrates those currently in the military and their families. ? On Monday, November 11, we collectively thank our veterans, old and young alike, for their defense and support of our constitution, courage to serve and protect our country, and bravery to stand up during difficult times. ? Another important way to honor veterans is to support their endeavors. Look for the veteran-owned businesses. There are approximately two million that create five million jobs in the US. You’ll find veteran-owned businesses in construction, retail, healthcare, accommodations, food service, real estate, transportation, finance, and more.
