MILESTONE UPDATE! ? Yesterday marked the two-week milestone in my 365-day fundraising challenge to support Stem4, and I’m feeling incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support so far. Your kindness, encouragement, and contributions are making a tangible difference in supporting young people’s mental health, and I can’t thank everyone enough for being part of this journey. ? This past week was particularly special for me—I ran for the first time since April 2024 after recovering from a significant injury. The run was made more memorable by the route, snow capped Yorkshire Pennines. Returning to running wasn’t easy, and it reminded me of the resilience needed to tackle life’s challenges, both physically and mentally. It’s a small but meaningful victory in a journey that’s not about fitness but about discipline and mental resilience, the same values that Stem4 empowers young people to develop. In these two weeks: Activities completed: 14 consecutive days of activities completed (total distance = 105km bike, 10k ran, 700 floors on the Stairmaster). Only small numbers now, but they will only increase as I tackle this challenge. Donations received: an unimaginable total of £3823. Every step, pedal, or floor climbed reminds me of the young people we’re helping—those who face challenges much harder than running or cycling. #SUDEPActionDay2024 1 out of every 150 people with poorly controlled seizures or epilepsy die from SUDEP. Before April 7, 2024, I was unaware of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death from Epilepsy). It wasn't until my brother passed away in his sleep that we learned seizures can lead to this risk. If you know anyone with seizures or epilepsy, please inform them about SUDEP and discuss it with their neurologist. Taking proactive steps can reduce risks and potentially save lives. There are resources out there, it’s a matter of having a conversation first. While it's too late for Jaaden, we can all help others avoid a similar fate. In honor of Jaaden Steward and others who have passed from SUDEP, the Steward family will be hosting a kickball fundraising event on Nov. 16th. We invite all who can to participate. Finished my second 5K this year yesterday. Woo hoo! The Waldwick 5K supports more than two dozen nonprofits each year and attracts hundreds of people. I was delighted to be a part of it! My goal is to complete 3-4 5Ks this year in my attempt to rebuild a habit of jogging, connect with my local community and have fun. Yesterday, I wanted to best my first 5K time and really enjoy the race. I beat my first time by 3 min and smiled the entire race (vs grimmacing and grinding my teeth like the first one). Have you been pondering a goal and aren’t sure how to get started? If I can restart jogging after being away from it for a decade, you can, too! ??1. Start small - choose a microstep to get going, something that you are totally capable of doing. I started with less than a mile and only 1-2 times a week so I wouldn’t get hurt or burn out. ?? 2. Tell a friend - get support from those around you. I told family and friends and their cheering helped me stay motivated. ?? 3. Celebrate the wins - a pat on the back goes a long way towards reinforcing a habit. Choose something that feels great to you. For me, it’s as simple as watching a favorite show, a small treat or a massage after each race. For those associated with 22 Jumps, we intimately understand the restorative power of willfully putting yourself in high-stress situations and living through them. Since our inception, it has been our goal to figure out how to bring servicemembers, veterans, and first responders into action sports through a restorative framework. In November 2023, after 18 months of planning, 8 veterans and first responders gathered in Moab, UT to launch a proof of concept for a new kind of retreat. In the end, the organizers got just as much out of it as the participants, and we're excited to continue expanding our vision of community, resilience-building, and non-pharmacological mental health outcomes improvement. Great teachers can come from the weirdest of places.... in my case this week in the shape of a green puppet frog. Have you been helped any unlikely seeming teachers? You never know when they might appear! The story. This week was a bit dire world wise, wasn't it…yesterday I put on some music which reflected my feelings of glumness for the appearance of a direction of travel and for all those who may be fearing for themselves and their families' futures. Then after my chosen track to cry into my soup, on Spotify Kermit the Frog’s "Rainbow Connection ?? " automatically followed…… such a change and not usually in?my repertoire (honest!.., though now it is)! It broke me completely out of glumness and any feeling of weakness and made me irrepressibly smile, it was gentle and loving and childishly simple. Fuel to keep persisting in love and courage and not hate and fear... Out of difficulty, the ripples of what everyone is creating in charities is amazing, tiny movements, big steps...., little moves, every day. It got me thinking what we can still create.. Know your strengths! ???? A few weeks ago we did a ?? fundraiser to support Ascension Peyton Manning’s Children hospital with friends in the business community. It was my style of golf - a scramble. ?? 4 players hit. Find the best ball. 4 players hit from there. Rinse and repeat. All day. It made me wonder what it would be like if we worked in “scrambles” at our companies. Should we all be hitting each ball (sharing different ideas) then taking the best ball (best strategies/plans) and doing it again for the next step? Probably Collectively our team was 10 under for the day with skills ranging from scratch golfer to golf cart bluetooth speaker DJ (me????♂?). Know your strengths and lean into others on your team with whatever may be needed for the situation - be it a 300 yard drive or a 90s Hip Hop playlist. ?? What role do you play in a scramble??
