On the wild, coastal rivers of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, Trout Unlimited is removing migration barriers, reconnecting floodplains and restoring critical spawning and rearing habitat for struggling populations of wild salmon and steelhead. In our new film, join TU’s Luke Kelly as he travels along iconic rainforest rivers visiting our partners and projects to celebrate the work underway and the federal infrastructure investments expanding the scale and impact of restoration on the Olympic Peninsula. For anglers and coastal Tribes, this work is critical to rebuilding wild steelhead and salmon runs. For local communities, these investments mean good jobs and durable road systems designed to withstand the impacts of a changing climate. Today, on World Environment Day, I had the privilege of giving a speech on the themes of Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience. During my research for this talk, I felt empowered to take action in restoring our degraded lands. I also made a personal commitment to raise more awareness and advocate for land restoration. I firmly believe that every small effort can contribute significantly to this crucial cause. #ourland #ourfuture. We are #GenerationRestoration

?? Partnering to Restore the Long Island Sound Watershed ?? We are thrilled to share our collaboration with Save the Sound and other organizations within the Long Island Sound River Restoration Network, all united by a common goal: restoring the natural flow of the region's rivers and revitalizing the Long Island Sound watershed. Why River Restoration Matters: Ecosystem Health: Restoring natural river flows helps revive aquatic habitats, supporting diverse species of fish, birds, and other wildlife. Water Quality: Healthy rivers filter pollutants, improving water quality and ensuring clean, safe water for communities. Flood Mitigation: Natural river systems reduce the risk of flooding by allowing rivers to flow freely, absorbing and managing excess water more effectively. Community Resilience: Revitalized waterways enhance local communities, offering recreational opportunities and boosting local economies. Check out our latest video where we showcase all the great work Save the Sound is doing! https://lnkd.in/eQHrk2nZ Our Commitment: Save the Sound, alongside its partners, is leading efforts to remove barriers, such as obsolete dams and culverts, and implement nature-based solutions to restore the natural hydrology of rivers feeding into the Long Island Sound. This initiative aims to reconnect over 1,000 miles of river habitat, promoting ecological resilience and sustainability. Key Projects Include: Dam Removal: Eliminating outdated dams to restore river continuity and fish migration routes. Riparian Buffer Restoration: Replanting native vegetation along riverbanks to stabilize soil and improve water quality. Community Engagement: Educating and involving local communities in river restoration efforts to foster stewardship and support. We are proud to be part of this transformative initiative, working hand-in-hand with Save the Sound and our network partners to ensure a healthier, more vibrant Long Island Sound watershed. ?? Join us in supporting river restoration and creating a sustainable future for the Long Island Sound. ?? #SaveTheSound #RiverRestoration #LongIslandSound #WatershedHealth #EcosystemRestoration #CleanWater #CommunityResilience #Sustainability #EnvironmentalStewardship #NatureBasedSolutions

Fighting Wildfires with Community-Driven Solutions in Guanajuato In the heart of Guanajuato, Mexico, the civil association Yaotzin Fuego y Territorio ("Los Chuines") is leading the charge against wildfires with nature-based solutions and Indigenous practices. From firebreaks to live fences, they blend modern technology with traditional wisdom to combat the rising number of wildfires—now 64 annually, up from just 5 two decades ago. Courtney Elmes highlights their inspiring efforts in sustainable land management, community education, and resilience building. Los Chuines exemplify the power of local initiatives in addressing global climate challenges, reminding us that protecting our planet starts with grassroots action. ?? ???Article of the Week: Coral Reef Restoration – A Lifeline for Coastal Communities??? A new study shows that restoring #coralreefs in Florida and Puerto Rico could save thousands of lives and prevent $391M in damage annually!???? Key Takeaways: ???Coral reefs reduce flooding and erosion, offering protection to vulnerable populations. ???$3 million/km investment can safeguard nearly 3,000 people and protect vital property each year. ???Reefs adapt to sea level rise—longer-lasting than manmade structures like seawalls. This research proves coral #restoration isn't just about saving ecosystems—it's about safeguarding lives and economies. “Most hazard mitigation and disaster recovery funding supports artificial infrastructure, such as seawalls, that degrade nature,” said?Michael W. Beck, Director of the UCSC Center for Coastal Climate Resilience?and a co-lead on the project. “By valuing the benefits of natural infrastructure, we level the playing field and open major new funding opportunities for reef restoration.” ???Read more:?“Hybrid coral reef restoration can be a cost-effective nature-based solution to provide protection to vulnerable coastal populations” was published today in the journal?Science Advances.?DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.adn4004 Photo Credit - Ocean Image Bank / Martin Colognoli

#ClimateChange, habitat loss, and #bycatch. All these issues affect #seabirds in the North East #Atlantic. But how can governments come together to successfully address them? ?? The #EU and Coastal States have come together to adopt the OSPAR led Regional Action Plan for Marine Birds (RAP-Bird). Ambitious and far-reaching, the plan sets out a comprehensive set of goals to achieve seabird recovery, and actions to meet these. This includes a call for states to consider developing and implementing a National Plan of Action to minimise, and where possible eliminate, incidental bycatch of seabirds from all #fishing gears in the North East Atlantic (see Theme C of the report, “Reduction of Pressures and Impacts” for more details). The success of this action will be measured against OSPAR’s indicator on seabird bycatch, which you can view in Table 1 of the RAP-Bird report here. ?? https://loom.ly/YiDU-Fc

This Desertification and Drought Day, let’s unite for land: our legacy, our future. Land degradation threatens nature, livelihoods and communities worldwide, it is increasing the frequency and intensity of drought and wildfires, and is a driver of forced migration and conflict. Yet we have the tools at our disposal to unite for land; We have real world examples through the UN Decade on Ecosystems Restoration Flagships of inclusive land restoration action, showing how we can all play our part. Through inclusive and sustainable restoration efforts, we can heal our relationship with nature and safeguard land for future generations. #UNited4Land #GenerationRestoration

Wetland Wonders! ?? After a productive first session of the Danube-Black Sea Community of Practice, the importance of wetlands and the need to restore them were addressed. Wetlands along the Danube act as natural water filters and flood protectors, playing a crucial role in maintaining the region's environmental balance. ?? Did you know that wetland restoration is a key focus of the DaWetRest project? By bringing these ecosystems back to life, we are ensuring a healthier, more resilient future for our waterways and communities. Let’s keep making efforts to preserve and restore these critical areas for generations to come. Together, we can protect our wetlands and their many benefits! ?? #MissionOcean #EUMissions #HorizonEU #WetlandsRestoration
