Meta's introduction of Teen Accounts on Instagram, which for under16s are private by default, with messaging and content filters at maximum, is a big shift and closer to age-appropriate differentiation. This is clearly Meta trying to get ahead of new laws and proposed bans on under16s using social media at all in Australia and elsewhere. It's also clearly Meta trying to regain the trust of parents, which will be an uphill battle. However, making parents the only ones who can change settings for under 16s will put more pressure on parents and require them skilling up significantly (pleasing some, annoying others). But read the fine print: Teen Accounts will role out at different paces globally, and will not available in some places until 2025. Hopefully someone can write a detailed guide about the supposedly more than 50 tools in these new settings by then!

Overnight Meta has announced ‘Instagram Teen Accounts’ for users under 16 years of age. These accounts will come with built-in protections that can only be removed with parental permission. The features will limit who can contact the teen as well as the content they will see. As standard the ‘Teen Account’ will restrict sensitive content, allow messages and tags only from people they are already connected to as well as time limit reminders after 60 minutes and sleep mode automatically enabled (sends auto replies and mutes notifications between 10pm and 7am). This announcement is good timing for the Australian Government as they have struggled to articulate how a ‘ban’ would actually be enforced. This mechanism is a lifeline to the cause with teens requiring ‘parental supervision’ enabled to ‘opt-out’. The tech company is also working on technology to improve age verification where teens use an adult birth date. Meta confirmed these changes will roll out immediately. “Today, we’ll start placing teens who sign up for Instagram into Teen Accounts, and we’ll notify teens already using Instagram about these changes so we can begin moving them into Teen Accounts next week.” Teens in Australia can expect the change to come into effect within the next 60 days. #instagramnews

Instagram Will Help Researchers Study If It’s Hurting Teen Mental Health ???? Instagram is opening its data to researchers to study the platform’s impact on the mental health of teens and young adults. This pilot program, in collaboration with the Center for Open Science (COS), aims to provide independent studies that explore the relationship between social media and teen well-being. ?????? Key Points of the Study Access to Data: Selected researchers will have access to Instagram data for up to six months. This includes information on account activity, usage patterns, and settings. However, demographic details and content of posts, comments, and messages will not be provided. ???? Selection and Recruitment: COS will select up to seven research proposals focused on teen mental health. Meta will not participate in the selection process. Researchers must recruit teen participants and obtain parental consent. ?????? Potential Impact: The study could offer valuable insights into how Instagram usage correlates with mental health issues like anxiety and depression. It will combine Instagram data with other research methods, such as surveys. ???? Background and Concerns The mental health effects of Instagram on teens have been a contentious topic, especially after Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen leaked documents in 2021 suggesting that Instagram exacerbates anxiety and depression in teens. This led to calls for more transparency from Meta regarding its internal research on mental health. ????? Meta’s Response and Future Steps In response to these concerns, Meta has introduced features to protect younger users. Despite these efforts, ongoing worries about child safety on social media platforms persist, leading to new legislation in the US regarding child safety and age verification. ???? Quotes “Parents, policymakers, academics, and technology companies are grappling with how best to support young people as they navigate online spaces, but we need more data to understand the full picture,” said Curtiss Cobb, Meta’s vice president of research. ?? Conclusion This initiative by Instagram and COS could provide a more comprehensive understanding of the platform’s effects on teen mental health, potentially guiding better support and safety measures for young users. ???? #Instagram #MentalHealth #TeenHealth #SocialMedia #Research #Meta #COS #Wellbeing #TechNews ????????

Instagram rolls out teen accounts with privacy, and parental controls! Meta Platforms is rolling out enhanced privacy and parental controls for Instagram users under 18. These "Teen Accounts" will default to private, allowing only followers or connected accounts to message or tag users. Sensitive content settings will also be set to the most restrictive levels, and teens under 16 will need parental permission to change these settings. Parents will have tools to monitor their children's interactions and limit app usage. This move comes as social media platforms, including Instagram, face lawsuits over their potential harm to young users. Studies have linked social media use to increased depression and anxiety among teens. Meta's update follows years of concerns over teen safety on social media. The new accounts will remind teens to close the app after 60 minutes daily and come with a default sleep mode for nighttime notifications. The rollout will begin in the U.S., UK, Canada, and Australia, with global implementation by January. #MetaUpdate #InstagramPrivacy #ParentalControls #TeenSafety #SocialMediaSafety #DigitalWellbeing #DigitalMarketing #OnlinePrivacy #SafeSocialMedia #TechNews #TeenAccounts #MuhammadAli #ParentalMonitoring #YouthOnlineSafety #BrandcomDigital #MetaPlatforms #DigitalHealth #SocialMediaReform

One of Meta’s most important updates recently, particularly with a people focus. Meta’s growth is contingent on trust and safety and this is a good step in strengthening both categories. Takeaways: - We’re introducing Instagram Teen Accounts to automatically place teens in built-in protections and reassure parents that teens are having safe experiences. - Teen Accounts will limit who can contact teens and the content they see, and help ensure their time is well spent. - Teens under 16 will need a parent’s permission to change any of the built-in protections to be less strict within Teen Accounts. https://lnkd.in/exnFmnaA

As both an educator and a mother, I’m thrilled to see Meta take a meaningful step in launching safer Instagram accounts for teens! It’s no secret that today’s tweens and teens are exposed to more of the real world—often before they are mentally or emotionally ready to handle it. Social media plays a huge role in shaping their self-acceptance and body image, sometimes in ways that aren’t always positive. This initiative gives young minds the space to explore their interests without the constant fear of encountering harmful content. It’s not just a digital safety net—it’s a lifeline for kids navigating some of their most formative years. The impact? - Less pressure to conform to unrealistic standards. - More room for self-discovery in a protected space. - Support for healthy mental and emotional development. This move feels like a step toward balancing the excitement of online exploration with the need to safeguard young minds. It’s reassuring to know that the social platforms kids use are beginning to evolve with their well-being in mind. Parenting and teaching in the digital age isn’t easy, but changes like this give me hope. Here’s to helping our kids grow up confident, curious, and safe! https://lnkd.in/gZW_d_Fe #educatorlife #meta #teens #tweens #safety #socialmedia #formativeyears
