Playing to your strengths is the fastest way to win. Does anyone use Strava? I started using it a few years ago while training to climb Mount Rainier. Gloucester Hill is a half-mile climb and the biggest ascent I have local access to. So while it’s not a mountain, I was able to put a lot of weight in my ruck and climb it over...and over…and over… I climbed it so often that I earned the title “Local Legend” in Strava for the number of times I hit it. Given my competitive nature, I asked, “What else can I achieve?” The fastest run up Gloucester Hill was 2 minutes and 14 seconds. I assumed whoever did it was on a longer run, so they probably didn’t hit that section as hard as they could. I decided to make it my workout. I ran a mile to the base at a comfortable pace. Loosened all the muscles. Put on my game face. Then I hit it as hard as I could. And finished 2 minutes slower than the record. That was an ego check. My strength isn’t speed. It’s stubborn determination and relentlessness. This led to a pretty big mental shift for me. And now that I’m more aware of it, I see it everywhere. So many businesses don’t tailor their work to their competencies. They do what everyone else does. That’s why they struggle to differentiate in the market, and worse, struggle to make the profit they could. Track your competencies and lean into them. Being in my mind is difficult to explain as it is a very very busy place, but to put it it simply; I have a million plans and ideas in my head but I just don’t know how to commit to any unless its a very safe and easy route. One of the main ambitions is to purchase my second home as a Buy To Let. As its unknown territory for me I just keep on kicking the can; too scared of the risks if I do actually go ahead with it... However, after attending Chris Selwood and Mary Selwood's Belfast Property Meet Event at NFS Events | National Football Stadium at Windsor Park yesterday evening and listening to one of #TedTalks guest speaker James Perry’s phenomenal approach to his life has completely changed my mindset. With excellent detail, he went through how his life chapters have become his lessons, which have in turn shaped his decisions later. This has had an incredible impact on my outlook of life and given me direction on how I wish to spend my (as he puts it) ‘ my short trip on Earth’. This event has given me the direction to begin my journey as a Landlord by just giving the simplest calculation: what are you passionate about + what's your purpose = your answer to a magical life! Near final preparations last night before the West Highland Way Race starts at 1am tomorrow (Saturday). Full details here ?? : https://lnkd.in/gx6jDyc9 *Full disclosure: I am not a competitor - just a support runner*. For those who do not know, the West Highland Way is a popular 95 mile long distance (usually) walk from Milngavie (Glasgow) to Fort William in the Highlands with challenging terrain and passing through iconic locations: #LochLomond, #RannochMoor, #GlenCoe to name a few. There is a reason the event is as close to the #LongestDay as possible... Like all challenges, whether #work or #personal, these events are all about the #planning and #preparation. I was approached to be a support runner by a good friend a month ago, as she said 'it's a pretty small pool of people capable of this sort of running and that I'd be happy spending 4/5 hours with' [no pressure]. I hesitated before saying yes. I had to think through my current fitness and whether I could get my #running back to the required standard in time. Most importantly, I know the effort she has put into her training, planning and preparation and we were there to support her for the #DevilOfTheHighlands last year (she was so quick I didn't need to run that time). Checking the event rules, meant getting all the kit out, checking it over since last used and making sure it is all in working condition. In doing so I found damage to my water pack (not critical), my headtorch (repairable) and I could not find my newest waterproof trousers - one of the perils of moving house recently - so the really old pair that have been patched from falls on sharp rock will have to suffice. The WhatsApp group convened for a call, sharing car registrations and photos of cars and registrations to aid identification. Then a run through of the logistics, food packs, check points, times, which people need to be re-positioned, who will rest when (the support crew need to be suitably rested and fresh for running or driving), and what are the anticipated times at which locations (I don't want to be late for my stint from south of Tyndrum to Glen Coe).
