As I watched the Olympics, I thought how wonderful it was that #diversity was shining through. And that is an important point because the ammunition used to instill fears about diversity in a changing America are based on the false notion that Black and Brown people are getting something they don’t deserve. "I worked 8 hours a day, 365 days a year so I could get through that season when I was 40 years old." 2) "When I was 35, 38 years old, I could score 30 points...but it wasn't the same way as when I was 25. I had to learn how to play without the ball, play in less space, use picks differently. I couldn't just drive to the basket like I could in my younger days." When I was 13, I had a shooting contest for my basketball number. That year was tough: I lost my father, gained a stepdad, my mom got pregnant, I met my new family, and we almost moved. I was always number 23—a huge Michael Jordan fan. I used to watch Jordan’s games before every one of mine. I still have his last Bulls game recorded on tape from my childhood. That year, a new kid joined our team and wanted my number. Knowing I was the best shooter at the time, our coach set up a shooting contest to shoot for the number. The previous year, I had made the most threes on the team. My coach believed I’d win, but I lost by one shot. I decided to wear the number 24 even before Kobe did. I chose 24 because I was still gunning for 23, and I felt I was better despite losing. I didn’t let it define me. 23 was mine. Who started that year? Me. Not him. Why do I share this? We all face losses and challenges. What do you do with them? Do you blame others and give up, or do you rise, fight for your spot, and strive to improve? I take the number above the one I lost and keep fighting. Even though I lost and didn’t perform my best at the time. You never truly lose; the clock just runs out.
