Partnering to reduce hospital equipment costs

Truly excellent event in Columbus yesterday with the Greater Ohio Chapter of AHRMM. A couple takeaways that reinforced the criticality of hospital supply chain teams: 1) Supply chain teams are TRULY burdened by the Baxter IV solution shortage. One Supply Chain Director I spoke with characterized it as worse than COVID because the procedures haven't stopped or slowed and the supply is just not there. This isn't getting talked about enough in broader healthcare circles and it's because of the heroic work supply chain teams are doing to keep things afloat. There were many calls for better resilience planning by both hospitals and suppliers, plus the inclusion of clinicians in the process of identifying high-risk supplies. However, IMO, in most cases the financial incentives aren't there for suppliers to truly diversify their supply chain (granted Baxter announced today it'd lose $200 mil from the NC factory shutdown). 2) Hospital supply chain teams deal with crazy one-off scenarios! Jodi Keller from the Central Ohio Trauma System described a rabies outbreak at a camp stressing Ohio's rabies vaccine supply, weather events, Crowdstrike impacting prescription software, etc. etc. etc... We're past National Healthcare Supply Chain Week, but these folks deserve continued appreciation. Many thanks to Ashley Brown, MHA, CMRP, RHIA, Hannah Miller, SMBA, CMRP, LSSYB and the team for organizing a great event!

Thanks for sharing. More transparency and collaboration between providers and suppliers will certainly improve resilience.
