What a great event! I always try to make time between work, meetings, childcare responsibilities (and everything else) for L&D opportunities, and this virtual event seemed too good to miss! This past week, I participated in my last National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC) Communications School as a member of the board. After two terms as Communications Director, then President-elect, President and Immediate Past President, my tenure will end June 1. After a tremendous #CommsSchool2024 in New Orleans, highlighted by presentations from Donna Brazille, Doug Heye, and Ben Feller; the opportunity to present the Communicator of the Year award to Andy VanSciver; and accpeting a Blue Pencil Gold Screen Award, the trip home gave me an opportunity to reflect on my tenure and the association. I joined the board at a time of transition. The purpose and value of the association was clear to see. So too were board vacancies, some stagnation and a management company lacking a growth mindset. I found a kindred spirit in Chris O'Neil, APR, and we started a push to make NAGC the premier association for government communicators in the country: A group where you were proud to be a member and one that was actively involved in advancing the profession. We found a great partner in a new management company, Management HQ. Dara Rudick and her team helped us focus on strategic goals and supported our push to grow and improve. Chris preceded me as president and kept us moving forward. Things were looking up, but just before I was to be sworn in as president, the COVID pandemic hit. Communications School had to be cancelled. I wondered whether I was going to be the president who had to close the doors. Instead, board members were nimble. They created an online summer seminar. We cut costs and enhanced our online offerings. We got stronger as an organization and actually grew membership. That growth has continued since the pandemic ended. Each year, NAGC's webinars, contests and Communications Schools have gotten better. We joined with The George Washington University to study trust in government communications so we can help the profession do better. We held our first Communications School on the West Coast since I've been a member. We expanded the board and enhanced engagement with volunteers and sponsors. The credit for those accomplishments belongs to all the people who worked so hard to get us to this point. My biggest contribution was recruiting great people to fill the board. They brought passion and expertise aligned with a shared vision for excellence. I am so proud of each and every one of them. Now, Tabitha Clark, APR gets to be the sage at board meetings and Leslie Gervasio will be our president. While we were in New Orleans, Chris, Tabitha, Leslie and I got to have this photo taken together. In just the time that the four of us have shared in the leadership of the association, so much has been accomplished and more is on the way. I depart the board knowing NAGC is in good hands and will be doing even greater things in the future. Cheers to all that is yet to come!

If I may speak candidly about bullshit... Because there's a lot of it around. Especially in public relations and public affairs. It goes by different names. Sometimes it's a three-hour meeting that could have been an email chain, others it's a two-hundred-page document of which only the summary gets skimmed, or it might be a huge planner that does not survive contact with reality. No matter what form it takes, bullshit stops you from doing what you want by smothering you in what you think you need. Alan Grant Communications is at the front line of the war on bullshit. No huge document and no tedious meetings, just efficient, productive communications with success measured in impact. If you want the admin and bureaucracy, please don't hire me.
