This November, join Treetop Friends for an enchanting exploration of the four seasons with our theme, "I Spy A New Season." Each week, students experience a journey through spring, summer, autumn, and winter, discovering the unique changes and impacts each season has on the world around us. From the blossoming flowers of spring to the snowy blankets of winter, children will engage in activities that not only teach them about the characteristics of each season but also how these changes affect animals, plants, and our planet. It’s a perfect time to encourage curiosity about the natural cycles of our planet! The Tree Catwalk Very nice educational activity for any group. When being in nature or when planting trees, there are various ways to connect with the life surrounding you. One thing can be to learn names of a plant or a tree (fighting 'plant blindness') A logical next step is to learn some characteristics of course. What is typical for this tree? How is it traditionally used? Where does its name come from and what does it mean? What other life does this tree attract? Does it appear in any mythology or local saga's? Of course we hope to help people to 'see with different eyes'. Beauty and stories are available everywhere, as long as we have trees an plants around us. Yes, life is a catwalk. But sometimes a show is only a real show when there is trees involved :) What is the latest thing that you learnt about nature? And how was that?
Tree CATWALK??? ECOrasmus is about making European educational Youth Work more sustainable. To make it 'greener'. Sometimes even literally. Do you consider to work with nature during your event? How can you that, in a playful way, while you - learn something about the name and characteristics of trees around you? - work outside in the open air? - combine your tree planting or any other activity with a fun and activating learning exercise? Let us introduce you our 'Tree Catwalk' Where participants introduce cool trees in the hippest way :) PS in two weeks our ECOrasmus website will be on air - you will also find some youthful tools there, and educational activities, free to download, like this one ;)

I love metaphors - there is so much meaning that remains hidden inside a metaphor to unpack. Is it a cheetah - the article is a brilliant metaphor for realising the potential of children. Though it references giftedness but can apply to a wider population. As a parent and education researcher, some thoughts the article left me thinking about: Schools (the best of them) promise the forest (no fault of theirs since that is how an institution is designed) but end up being zoos. Whether the child encounters a 'forest' or a 'zoo' may not be a static association with a particular institution. A family can become a zoo or a forest to a child depending on how rigid the beliefs of the people in the family are. The same goes for schools or any learning experience. The zoo by definition is a 'paid entry' v/s the forest is free - does learning have to be a paid experience? Can we create mini forests outside of the dominant zoos that are ubiquitous? Is 'culture' a zoo? How does one sensitize oneself to find the forest outside of it so that we can inspire the children around us? The list goes on... Please share your thoughts on what did metaphor sparked for you. https://lnkd.in/gTQgFnHB #giftedness #potentialofeverychild #nurturinggiftedness #earlychildeducation

National Geographic Kids is a great resource for K-6 teachers and students. When teachers show students videos of topics they may not have access to, it would fit the transformation part of the SAMR model. For example, the National Geographic Kids Website has videos that introduce interesting facts about animals from all over the world. In particular, this will be useful for teaching grade 4 science and technology when students learn about animals and habitats. The website also sorts animals into different categories such as mammals, birds, and reptiles. Under each category, the website uses student-friendly language to explain how animals are put under various groups. https://lnkd.in/guhThWhP #Edutech #NationalGeographic

The latest news from RTPI
ROGER TORY PETERSON INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES SCHOLARS-IN-RESIDENCE Canisius University Faculty to Expand Spark Bird Project Jamestown, NY – March 5, 2024 – The Roger Tory Peterson Institute proudly announces the naming of Dr. Jennifer Lodi-Smith and Janet McNally, professors at Canisius University, as the inaugural RTPI Scholars-in-Residence. As Scholars-in-Residence, Lodi-Smith and McNally will expand the focus of The Spark Bird Project to include the perspective of artists. The Spark Bird Project (https://lnkd.in/e63nEPnW) is designed to gather and share the stories of people’s passion for birds while gaining scientific insights into a critical missing piece in the ecology of birds: birders themselves. “When Roger Tory Peterson was 11 years old, he had an unexpectedly up-close encounter with a northern flicker,” said Arthur Pearson, CEO of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. “That ‘spark bird’ experience changed his life, setting him on a course to becoming the father of the modern field guide and international ambassador for birds.” In the United States, 45 million people identify themselves as birdwatchers. Many if not most of them had a similar “spark bird” experience – some encounter with a particular bird that transformed them into life-long lovers of birds. Along the way many of them also were sparked and supported by field guides like Peterson’s as well as specific individuals and their local community birding groups. “As a Professor of Psychology,” Lodi-Smith shared, “I was struck by the spark bird story of Peterson and so many other birders, but dismayed that there is scant academic scholarship on this topic. While we are doing a great job of understanding birds, we know very little about birders themselves. The Spark Bird Project aims to better understand who birders are and who potential birders may be – insights which can help shape how organizations such as RTPI engage more people in the beauty and wonder of birds.” As part of the project, Lodi-Smith and McNally will host a series of podcasts with birders, environmentalists, educators, and artists, to share and discuss their spark bird experiences. “Roger Tory Peterson is one of countless artists whose future careers were fueled by a spark bird experience,” Pearson added. “As a museum dedicated to nurturing the next generation of nature artists, RTPI is particularly looking forward to learning more about the artist perspective on spark birds – to further inform our mission, strategy and goals.” *???*???* Read the full press release: https://conta.cc/49I157s
