As we celebrate world wetland day 2nd/ Feb/ 2024 we have to note that several activities can have significant negative impacts on wetland ecosystems, undermining their ecological functions and services. Protecting and conserving wetlands is crucial for maintaining biodiversity, water quality, flood control, and other ecosystem services they provide.
Below are some of the activities that pose a danger to our wetlands??
1) Drainage and Filling:
Wetlands are often drained and filled for agriculture, urban development, and infrastructure projects, leading to the loss of wetland habitat.
2) Pollution: Discharge of pollutants from agriculture, industry, and urban runoff can degrade water quality in wetlands, harming plant and animal life.
3) Overfishing and Over Harvesting: Unsustainable fishing and harvesting practices can disrupt wetland ecosystems by depleting populations of fish, shellfish, and other aquatic species.
4) Invasive Species Introduction: Introducing non-native plant and animal species can outcompete native species, alter ecosystem dynamics, and disrupt the balance of wetland ecosystems.
5) Channelization and Dredging: Altering natural water flow patterns through channelization and dredging can disrupt wetland hydrology, leading to loss of habitat and reduced water retention capacity.
6) Extraction of Natural Resources: Mining, logging, and peat extraction in wetland areas can lead to habitat destruction, soil erosion, and loss of biodiversity.
7) Reclamation for Agriculture: Converting wetlands into agricultural land can lead to loss of biodiversity, reduced water filtration capacity, and increased susceptibility to soil erosion and flooding.
8) Recreational Activities: Unregulated recreational activities such as off-road vehicle use, camping, and trampling can damage wetland vegetation and disturb wildlife.
9) Infrastructure Development: Construction of roads, bridges, and other infrastructure projects in wetland areas can fragment habitat, disrupt natural water flow, and lead to habitat loss and degradation
