The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is a family of funds dedicated to confronting biodiversity loss, climate change, pollution, and strains on land and ocean health. Its grants, blended financing, and policy support helps developing countries address their biggest environmental priorities and adhere to international environmental conventions. Over the past three decades, the GEF has provided more than $24 billion and mobilized $138 billion in co-financing for 5,700 national and regional projects. As a financial mechanism for international environmental treaties, they have played a catalytic role in tackling the major environmental issues facing Africa. Their latest publication provides insights into their work and illustrates how African countries are diligently working to fulfil their obligations under these agreements. https://lnkd.in/eVdQ6gUS #industryupdates #climatefinancing #climateaction #energycaccess?

Africa faces unique and urgent environmental and climate challenges. From the impact of climate change on agriculture to deforestation and biodiversity loss, these issues demand immediate attention and collaborative solutions. Key areas of focus include: Climate Change Adaptation: Developing strategies to build resilience against extreme weather events and changing climate patterns affecting agriculture and water resources. Renewable Energy Development: Accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources to provide sustainable and reliable power while reducing carbon emissions. Biodiversity Conservation: Protecting diverse ecosystems that are critical to both local and global environmental health. Deforestation and Land Degradation: Implementing sustainable land management practices to combat deforestation and soil erosion. As we address these challenges, it's essential to support innovative solutions, engage local communities, and foster international cooperation. Let's work together to ensure a sustainable and resilient future for Africa. What initiatives or projects have you seen making a difference in these areas? In this era of climate injustice, sub-Saharan African countries and small island states suffer the consequences of climate change. The narrative has been consistent: the West should be blamed for the climate crisis and therefore pay for their emissions. However, this method has not changed anything. Emissions are high! As far as the result of emission is credit, once the profit cap for firms is high they can easily suffix their carbon credit. This creates no room for change if neutrality and sequestration actions do not succeed. Join me for an intriguing discussion on World Environment Day with Green Innovation for People and Nature as we aim to prepare a campaign draft against states and industrial activities that cause desertification, land degradation, and drought.

?? Today, as we mark the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict, it's a timely reminder that environmental protection is essential for peacebuilding and sustainable development. War and armed conflicts do not just destroy communities - they also strip the environment of its natural resources, compromising the ecosystems that people rely on for food, water, and shelter. From Afghanistan to Ukraine, Iraq to Nigeria, we've seen how major conflict zones suffer severe ecological degradation. Deforestation, toxic pollution, biodiversity loss - the environmental toll of war is staggering. But we can change this. By integrating environmental protections into our conflict management policies, we can strengthen prevention strategies and promote inclusive, sustainable recovery. Key steps include: ??Incorporating environmental assessments into conflict management efforts. ??Tracking the environmental impact of armed conflicts ??Ensuring natural resources are protected from exploitation during and after crises We must prioritise environmental sustainability alongside peacebuilding. Only then can we truly achieve the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals (SDGs) and create a more resilient, equitable future for all. ??The health of our environment is inextricably linked to the stability of our societies. ?? https://bit.ly/3CdDOOB #Peacebuilding #EnvironmentalProtection #SustainableDevelopment
