?? When do I invest in new gear??? (and some thoughts on recording mono vs. stereo) Recently, I discovered the answer to buying new equipment lies in whether I feel my current gear is holding me back, and whether investing in a new tool will push me to explore different techniques beyond my self-imposed limitations?? While my trusty mono Shure SM7B served me well for over a decade (!), I began to feel I was missing a certain depth in my recordings, particularly for string instruments ??, which often sounded thin and nasal. For years I had rejected the notion of gear being a creative person’s limiting factor, though as I continued recording projects which felt satisfactory at best, I realized an upgrade needed to be made. After careful consideration, I invested in and began recording with a stereo pair of Neumann KM 184 microphones and… WOW, was I instantly blown away. Not only did they over-deliver in enhancing the depth of my recordings, but the key takeaway was how this upgrade encouraged me to break out of my previous habits and limitations using a mono mic (e.g. while specific to the SM7B, not all mics were meant to be close positioned haha ??) With a new tool in my collection, I finally felt encouraged to record in alternative ways, such as positioning the mic a little further to capture more ambience, or considering vertical positioning to change the timbre (higher positioning seemed to cause excessive scratchiness, supposedly related to the f-hole directions of my violin and cello; 1.5 meters from the sound source and 1.5 from the ground seemed to strike the right balance ??). ~This said, the SM7B will still be my go-to for up-close horns and vocal recordings when I need that tight studio sound ????. I’m simply offered a new sense of flexibility. Anyone else experienced a similar gear epiphany?
