Let's talk about spin. Whether you are trying to land your dream job, win that project contract, or make a sale, your success depends on how well you can spin a positive narrative. That's easier said than done, especially if life has knocked you off track. This summer I have been thinking about how it's been 10 years since the first major hit to my confidence as an engineer. "Manufacturing is a place for men with big plumber butt cracks. It's not the place for a lady." - said the gate-keeping manager who had me twiddling my thumbs, while equally competent classmates got real assignments. To say the least, I really struggled to put a positive spin on this. In circus and in life, through practice I've gotten much better and spinning. I stuck things out anyway, and leaned into working on tasks other engineers wouldn't or couldn't do. I have a lot to be proud of throughout my career, especially my perseverance. The things I have built prove that I can be a lady, and an asset to manufacturing. I will be looking for all my ladies at IMTS - International Manufacturing Technology Show tomorrow through Friday!
