This truck looks to have a very important safety measure for heavy loads, and no, it’s not the automatic strapping mechanism. What that mechanism lacks in versatility and scalability and (almost certainly) code compliance it compensates for by having a stop-wall welded to the back. Now, when the heavier loads on this rig break free, if that weld isn’t strong enough to hold them back (and here’s where we need someone fluent in mechanical engineering) you won’t just have the load coming at your car, but a massive metal square as well. Automation, like ai, won’t kill us all by itself, but what it has a propensity to do is make us less vigilant. Cell phones may help us become safer drivers by taking the guesswork out of navigation and by speaking the upcoming turn or exit aloud. But they have also been integral in distracting drivers leading to literally thousands of road deaths. Every time we see an innovation like this we need to take a breath and then ask some serious questions. As someone who consults in the traffic safety space I have my doubts about this technology. What I would love to hear is what CDL drivers think. If you know one please tag them. I would be just as happy to be thanked as to be called out for overreacting. Mostly I want that expert opinion from someone who does this every day.
