I cried every day on my drive to work for almost a year... At some point during that year, I realized I was burning out... for the second time (I was a slow learner). This time, something just wasn’t right. It was getting harder and harder for me to feel any kind of motivation or satisfaction in my work. I wasn’t connecting with my students, I was feeling disconnected from the University. So my response was to: 1. Blame myself - I figured there was something wrong with me…that I was the problem 2. Work harder. I thought maybe that was it - I just wasn’t working hard enough and if I did, then everything would sort itself out. Turned out neither of those things was true. What was true was that I had lost track of my own values and at the same time, the University’s values were shifting. When I took the time to reconnect with my core values, and compare them to that of the institution, I could see that there was a big disconnect – and it had nothing to do with me. The relief I felt was palpable, and once I was able to see where the disconnect was, I could do something about it - I was able to: ?? Let go of trying to change things where there was a clash of values and stop banging my head against a brick wall ??Figure out how to get those values met outside of work ??More easily set boundaries between work and home ??Put my energy where it *was* going to make a difference And I can’t even tell you the difference that made. It didn’t take long before I was feeling more energized and connected to my own scholarship and my students again. Plus, I stopped dreading going into the office. Knowing our core values is so important – values give meaning to our lives and are intimately connected to our life’s purpose. Yes because it is possible to interact in real-time with people from different parts of the world thanks to the internet, and no because different places may have different time zones and what may be convenient for one may not be for another - especially when you are in Africa and planning an online meeting with participants from Asia and North America. Take for example an online meeting between me here in Nairobi Kenya (GMT+3) with someone in Tokyo Japan (GMT+9) and another in Denver USA (GMT-6). What is the best time to set up an online meeting?
