If you are seeking a career in #AI, here are lessons from the excellent #AI job fair organized by Judah Phillips, Paul Baier and the state of Massachusetts in Boston yesterday. I was thrilled to see the sheer energy and volume of talent in the room -- literally 100s of AI enthusiasts -- Boston has good thing boding for it in AI. ## Via Carol Meyers 1. Working in AI, especially startups, is going to be INCREDIBLY HARD.? 2. Spend time learning, don't wait for training, have a growth mindset, and most importantly: Adopt a GSD (Get Stuff Done) habit.? 3. Things in AI are changing at an incredible pace -- learn to "shape shift" -- your role could be changing by the month -- roll with it. ## Via Raj Aggarwal 1. INTERVIEW QUESTION: "Tell me a personal Gen AI project" 2. Understand the abilities and limits of AI Tech. ## Via Gregory Raiz 1. What is your passion? And how have you used AI to fulfill that? 2. "Forensic evidence" - GitHub profile, social media --- there are tell-tale signs in your github and Linkedin profile around your passions.? ## ALDEN's DOs 1. If you are CS (AI/ML/SDE,DS) -- your github profile is your PERSONAL ADVERTISEMENT -- nobody's reading your resume any more (sorry!) .. 2. On your github profile, your PASSION has to jump out ... check your own green dots and commit history. (Ninja tip: When were the commits made? Was it at 4PM or 2AM -- and on what project?) 3. For students: Companies want to see what you are doing OUTSIDE your assignments and research projects. What is your passion project and who's life did you IMPACT from your project.? 4. For Sales/Marketing people : What does your Linkedin (or Twitter) profile say about you? 5. GO DEEP : In interviews, its not about answering questions and showing that you know about topics -- the main thing to discuss will be your PASSION project OUTSIDE of regular work/assignments/courses. How deep did you go into it??(Elon Musk has this question "Tell me about the toughest passion project outside of work that you worked on"?and then go deep into it) 6. AI is touching literally every job and function in society -- PICK A NICHE and try and make an impact .. You will learn how to make an impact and iterate to solve the problem. ## ALDEN's DONTs 1. BEING UNPREPARED : I was quite disappointed that some people just showed up -- totally unprepared with "Sir, do you have a job for me?" -- the market is competitive -- do your homework. 2. THINKING GRADES IS ALL I NEED : Good grades (especially in foundational subjects like Data Structures) matter a lot -- but that is not all -- companies want to see your passion project OUTSIDE of school or co-op work. OUTSIDE means "outside of your regular school or work". Beyond that, it was great to talk to the students (mostly from Northeastern University) and meet partners like Mark Aiello from Overture Partners. Do check my Linkedin for roles we are #hiring for .. I used to walk away from career fairs with nothing but a stack of business cards and no real connections. Sound familiar? The mistake most people make at these events (and in interviews) is focusing too much on themselves—their skills, their resume, their goals. “Hi, my name is Mandy Liu. I’m a 3rd year student in X major, and I can do back flips and keep my eyes open for 2 minutes without blinking.” ? Cue the snooze button… Let me break it to you: ?????????????????? ??????’?? ???????? ?????????? ?????????????????????? ????. ???????? ???????? ?????????? ???????? ?????? ?????? ??????????? ????????. Flip the script. Here’s how you can do it in 5 easy steps ?? ???????? 1: ?????????? ???????? ?? ???????????????????? ???? ?????????????????????????????? “Hi, I’m [Your Name]. I was excited to see your company here today! I’ve been following [Company Name] because of [recent news] or [why you wanna work there].” Boom - you’ve just grabbed their attention and set a positive tone. ???????? 2: ?????? ???????? ????????’???? ?????????????? ?????? “Before I share a bit about myself, I’d love to hear what you’re looking for in an entry-level Data Scientist.” Smart—now you’re tailoring your pitch to fit exactly what ???????? want. ???????? 3: ?????????? ???????? ?????????????????? “I’m a 4th year Statistics student. I want to help B2C companies turn data into product strategies, so they can generate more revenue. You mentioned a need for coding skills and product knowledge - those are exactly my expertise. I’ve used SQL and Python extensively in projects, and I drove two feature launches in my summer internship with my product expertise.” Mic drop. You’ve just tied your experience directly to their needs. ???????? 4: ???????????? ?????? ???????????? ?????????? ?????????? People love feeling heard. Reflect their thoughts back to them with phrases like: - It sounds like… - To summarize, you’re saying… - If I understand you correctly… For example: “So, you transitioned from Data Science to Product Management? It sounds like your team was really supportive, and I love how [Company Name] encourages career flexibility.” ???????? 5:??????? ??????????, ???????????????? ?????????????????? Instead of the usual “What’s your day like?” aim for questions that show curiosity and depth: - What’s the most rewarding part of your job? - What’s the biggest challenge in your role? - Which stakeholders do you collaborate with the most? Their answers are pure gold. Use them to your advantage, either during the chat or later in the interview process. For example, I learned from a recruiter that their Data Scientists work closely with growth marketers. I dove deep into understanding how growth marketers work—and aced my partner round.
