In today's digital age, data management has profound implications for our rights and well being. To create a just digital future, it is essential that policies and procedures around data management prioritize privacy and fairness. At the heart of this effort is robust data governance, which ensures that data is shared safely, remains available at critical points of need, and protects everyone’s privacy. Strong governance not only builds trust but also enables effective care. The meaningful use of health data by all stakeholders is crucial for informing and improving health outcomes on a national scale. By collaborating and making data driven decisions, we can shape a healthier future for all. As we embrace digital health technologies, prioritizing the inclusion of all communities is essential. By centering discussions on advancing maternal and newborn health, we can develop solutions that genuinely serve everyone. Data should be leveraged as a public good to benefit everyone. By using data responsibly, we can better prepare for the future and make informed decisions that serve the public interest. It is crucial to uphold the highest standards in managing health data, particularly for key populations. Protecting their privacy and ensuring data integrity are vital for delivering quality care. Together, we can ensure that digital health innovations benefit all, leaving no one behind. ?? Kudos to my #USAID colleagues on the release of the Digital Health Position Paper (2024-2029)! It is a thoughtful, forward-looking primer on digital health transformation, rooted in sound strategies and valuable lessons learned. I was very happy to see the paper’s emphasis on person-centered and integrated approaches (such as coordinated care, data interoperability, etc.)—which is also core to our strategy at Endless Foundation to strengthen resilient, results-oriented, and responsive health systems. https://lnkd.in/e2XHEj-D ?? There are, however, a couple of points I want to emphasize that I thought got somewhat lost in the document: 1. Health Outcomes Measurement – We need to look closely at the translation of digital health investments into measurable health outcomes. As the WHO flagship report showed a couple of years ago, many digital health initiatives are not yet fully translating to tangible improvements in population health. Embedding and standardizing measurement of health outcomes and care experiences (e.g. client satisfaction) into the digital health frameworks (e.g. Smart Guidelines) could bridge this gap and help make the case for further investments stronger. 2. Health Data Ownership and Stewardship – While this document calls for better government stewardship of health data, I strongly believe we need to revisit this tenet. In addition to cybersecurity and privacy concerns (even Google and Meta fail to keep client data safe, let alone governments), there are frankly many instances where people cannot trust governments with their health data (imagine an LGBTQ person in Uganda or Afghanistan). In my own country of Bangladesh, the ousted Prime Ministers' son and his minions apparently sold the entire national ID database of 70M+ people to third parties for private gain. In preparation for the era of AI, we must find more decentralized, private and patient-owned-and-controlled approaches to health data management, to avoid such breaches of trust and privacy. Following through on these priorities with continued investments is essential, which I hope the upcoming Trump administration appreciates and continues to support. Congratulations again on this important milestone! ???? #DigitalHealth #GlobalHealth #USAID Merrick S. Amarynth Sichel Adele Waugaman Alain Labrique

Did you know that over 50% of the global population still lacks access to essential digital health technologies? According to the World Health Organization study, 37% of people lack internet access, and in sub-Saharan Africa, only 28% of healthcare facilities have reliable electricity. This stark reality underscores the importance of advocating for Digital Health Justice: a topic I had the privilege of exploring during an intensive 5-day advanced short course organized by Afya na Haki During this transformative week, we delved into: 1?? The fundamentals of digital health justice 2?? Africentrism in digital health 3?? Legal and ethical frameworks 4?? Advocacy strategies 5?? The AAAQ framework ?? Key Takeaway: Advocacy is not just about raising your voice rather it’s about designing practical, evidence-based strategies that drive sustainable impact in digital health. I am deeply grateful to Afya na Haki and all the facilitators for this enlightening experience. Together, we can work toward a future where digital health is equitable, accessible, and just. #DigitalHealthJustice #Advocacy #EquityInHealth #LearningJourney

Among all of the excellent research articles in the just-published and Data.FI-led #OxfordOpenDigitalHealth special issue, we wanted to share a superb piece authored by our Data.FI/Honduras colleagues! Its authors ask a simple but critical question: Did Data.FI’s data use methodology contribute to increased workforce capacity during a one-year period of implementation in two Honduran health regions—Central District & San Pedro Sula? Through surveys, interviews, and #qualitative analyses, the team examined potential gains in data use skills, leadership, and regional governance. The findings are clear: After one year of meeting in situation room settings, most participants reported being ‘competent’ or ‘expert’ in analysis and data visualization (59%) and being ‘very confident’ or ‘confident’ in applying data use competencies (83–93%). These improvements represent one way in which Data.FI is working to strengthen the digital health enabling environment, leading to a more capable eHealth workforce and building a culture of leadership and governance—both of which are #WorldHealthOrganization building blocks for strong health systems. The study also points to the successful implementation of situation rooms in Honduras, with clear indications of replicability for other diseases and potential applications for new health emergencies. ? Huge kudos to each of the authors: Freddy Ernesto Hidalgo Gomez, Liziem Valladares, Diana Gonzalez, and Lorenzo Pavón. And special thanks to David Castellanos for his role supporting COVID-19 activities implementation in Honduras. You can read the Honduras research article here: https://lnkd.in/gPMCjkgC. I am exhilarated to share that I’ve completed an insightful course on Digital Health and National Planning Systems! I must say that this was a bit challenging to me because beyond the interplay between privacy and digital health, I had to learn a whole lot of other critical stuff. While we are all agog with emerged and emerging technologies, especially in developing a national health strategy, we must always take into cognizance, the ethical components of: ?? Equity – is the strategy promoting health services that will be able to reach the most vulnerable populations? ?? Resources – is the strategy managing resources in an effective way? Is it being a good shepherd of the public’s money? ?? Safe use – is the strategy promoting safe use of technology and tools? Are the things that are being invested in evidence-based and tested? ?? Privacy and Data Protection – is the strategy implementing measures to protect sensitive information and data? Remember: Technology is not a silver bullet and sometimes, technology may not even be the best solution for the problem you are addressing! I can now say this: If you're looking for someone with expertise in digital health, data privacy, and national planning systems, feel free to reach out! I'm always eager to collaborate on opportunities that shape the future of health and technology. Many thanks to World Health Organization USAID for the course; Emeka Nwankwo for believing I could do the course and then nominating me for the course. #DigitalHealth #NationalPlanning #DataProtection #Privacy #HealthTech #Innovation #ProfessionalGrowth #LearningJourney #HealthcareTransformation #Africa
