?? You know what I love about presents? They make me feel so known. ?? My lovely friends and family were far too kind this year and celebrated my birthday with all sorts of lovely gifts: hand drawn pictures of special places, everything I need for my new knitting hobby, days out painting pottery, books, cake and of course, some Swiftie themed gifts. ?? I love getting to celebrate my clients on the same way. Whether it’s a thank you for a referral, a card to celebrate a product launching, remembering what’s going on in their lives or a wee Christmas gift. ?? It’s one of my favourite things about running a business. I get to shape it and make the decisions. I get to choose how I celebrate and thank my clients. Part 2... In 2017 things were coming together with 8/28. I had some wins with this concept and by then Brian Ashley had joined us or re-joined us if you factored in his Quintron AccessNsite history. By this point I also got to know Ken Larson and Scott Lindley and it was back in my AD days that I discovered LEGIC...yeah kids this is journey. American Direct was now pushing $102 million in revenue yearly....in 7 years we went from $37 million to $102 million in revenue in 2017! Can you say growth? Byron knew disruption would drive the growth. He would famously say "there is a river of data flowing through the door opening, we need to own the doorway." Damn he was right... In 2017 though my wife Jess Willis and I had decided to leave the PNW for sunny Colorado and honestly, I was burned out. I could see the future of our industry but the path I felt was not seen by the lock manufacturers. They didn't know shit about data (still don't). I was doing a lot of multi-family projects and an upstart Smart Lock company was making waves...that company was LATCH. Hmmm I bet a manufacturer would benefit from what I know about the industry and hardware and access control. So, with the move to Colorado I also decided to change my career trajectory. Yeah...I am that guy...F... it, all in on change. I soon had two job offers. Stanley/dormakaba and PDQ. I went with PDQ which shocked the shit out of everyone including John DelCollo, AHC who had become a good friend and mentor at AD. Why PDQ? Well because they were partnered with Delphian Systems and once I met John Veleris I knew another visionary when I saw one. But those are stories for another day. Back to AD. After I left they continued to grow and expand. I stayed in contact with many of my old co-workers and associates and even poached a few away to join me in disrupting the lock business hey John LeBoeuf and Mary Loreto. I learned so much during my time at American Direct. The talent pool there was deep with super smart people. Shout out to Bria Humphrey, Kellie Volz, Debbie Bray, Eric Rohleder, Melissa Jenkins, MBA and Eric Van Scoy and honestly so many others. Once I saw the future that Byron saw though I was determined to chase it. Now the funny thing is American Direct was doing M&A in the CHD space before it was cool but soon enough the others were fast following. Alas...the only constant is change, which leads me to why I have written these posts and the End of an Era post yesterday. American Direct is now part of the UDH Group I was informed yesterday. That news caught me a bit off guard, but I was soon excited for them. My time at American Direct helped to put me where I am today. Change is good, even if it is a bit scary at times. Disruption and transformation continues, cheers to Byron Whetstone and American Direct! I see a bright future ahead.

8 year anniversary in business for NEWOD today! ?? Photo below is the first photo I took this morning in my normal working attire and after my 1st cup of coffee, no special effects or fancy lighting, just me as I am! What a journey it has been! As a bonus, I thought I would share 8 things that have helped me along the way and hopefully they might help you too: 1) Be consistent. 2) Try and learn something new every day. 3) Try and push your business forward each day. 4) Keep hydrated! 5) Try and do some form of exercise/activity away from the business. I often think of good ideas when I am not IN the business. 6) Hang in there! Every business has busy and quiet spells so sometimes you just have to hang in there. 7) Have a good support network around you at all times. Business can be a lonely place especially when you are on your own. 8) Telemarketing is hard so why don't you get me to do it for you? ??
