Honestly, sometimes all a company can afford is to pay minimum wage. That's actually okay. But if that's the case, then you need to offer other benefits to balance things out. I have worked in the non-profit world for most of my adult life, and we often can't pay nearly as much as we would like to. So what else can an employer offer to make it a good place to work? Things like: -a flexible schedule (or at least allowing employees to have more control over their schedule) -free food -free access to mental healthcare -money to help pay for training or education -opportunity for advancement -access to networking events -employee appreciation parties and gifts -technology to get their job done -the ability to work seasonally -help or increased flexibility for parents But the biggest game-changer in any work environment is going to be a good manager. The old saying is true: "people don't leave companies; they leave bosses." I mean, sometimes it isn't all on the boss. But John Maxwell says "everything rises and falls on leadership." So most of the time, it is on the boss. Ever work for a truly good boss? It can make a minimum wage job feel worth it. It creates a positive environment that is actually fun to work in. Ever work for a toxic boss? It can make the highest-paying jobs feel miserable, and creates a tense and frustrating environment. So don't let pay be the only thing your organization thinks about. Be as competitive as you can be. But no matter what, make sure you hire really good managers. And if you are the manager, then make sure you're a good one. #leadership #culture #work
