Precast concrete boxes and pipe included in implementation of the Gateway development stormwater master plan in Forney, Texas Precast concrete boxes and pipes are a key component of the stormwater management infrastructure for the Gateway development in Forney, Texas, a 2,000-acre mixed-use community focused on sustainable growth. To protect the area from flooding and pollution, the development incorporates advanced green infrastructure, modern drainage systems, and flood prevention measures, all in compliance with regulations from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). The stormwater drainage system is designed to handle extreme weather events and reduce flood risks. Precast concrete structures buried underground, efficiently collect and convey stormwater runoff. The Turner Company supplied 5,700 feet of precast concrete boxes for culverts and road crossings in various sizes, including 5-foot x 3-foot, 6-foot x 4-foot, 7-foot x 6-foot, 7-foot x 5-foot, 7-foot x 4-foot, and 10-foot x 6-foot. The 5-foot x 3-foot boxes were used to construct a twin culvert. The Turner Company also provided 5,500 feet of reinforced concrete pipe in sizes from 18-inch to 48-inch in diameter. These products were delivered in October, and the drainage system is expected to be completed by mid-2025. Moss Utilities, LLC of Dallas, led by Superintendent Angel Perez, and Shawn Lain, Vice President, Client Relations is handling the installation. As Forney continues to grow, future developments must prioritize stormwater management to prevent overloading the city’s drainage systems. Coordinating stormwater management across different developments will be critical to maintaining the city’s resilience to heavy rainfall and flooding events. Precast concrete boxes and pipe used for stormwater drainage systems and road-crossings are essential elements of stormwater master plans. The Turner Company provides a series of "Lunch 'n' Learn" workshops and plant tours for its customers, focusing on the core products of the company. To arrange for a workshop or tour, please contact Jeff Hite, Director of Technical Resources or Matt Daniels, Director of Sales at +1 817-638-9053. The Turner Company welcomes customers to its Rhome or Lockhart facility to witness the production of drainage products. This is an interesting decision... a barrier island community recently voted to remove the requirement for stormwater plans to be prepared by an engineer. Based on the article, the argument appears to be that since it is a barrier island, it will always flood, the town engineer reviews the plans for approval, and builders complained it costs too much. However, these points actually highlight the importance of engineers in ensuring that standards are not compromised and in finding creative solutions for managing stormwater on barrier islands. #stormwatermanagement #civilengineer

“SUDS-based solutions such as blue roof systems can lower the impact of rainfall on sewerage systems.” ? Writing in Roofing Today Magazine, Kevin Bohea of ACO Building Drainage UK & Ireland talks about protecting sewerage systems from overflows. ? Surface Water Drainage System:?This system collects and redirects surface water, such as rainwater or runoff, away from structures and landscapes to prevent flooding and water damage. It typically includes gutters, downspouts, and surface drains. Subsurface Drainage System:?Subsurface drainage systems are installed underground to remove excess water from the soil and control groundwater levels. They often consist of perforated pipes, drain tiles, and drainage blankets to facilitate water movement. French Drain System:?A French drain is a type of subsurface drainage system that uses a perforated pipe surrounded by gravel or rock to redirect groundwater away from an area. It is commonly used to prevent water accumulation around foundations or in low-lying areas. Stormwater Management System:?Stormwater management systems are designed to control and treat stormwater runoff to reduce pollution and protect natural water bodies. They may include detention ponds, bio-retention basins, and permeable pavement systems. Combined Sewer System:?In some urban areas, a combined sewer system is used to collect both sanitary sewage and stormwater runoff in the same pipe network. During heavy rainfall, these systems may overflow, leading to combined sewer overflows (CSOs) into water bodies. Separate Sewer System:?A separate sewer system has separate pipes for sanitary sewage and stormwater runoff, keeping them distinct throughout the drainage network. This system helps prevent overflows and allows for better management of wastewater and stormwater. Green Infrastructure System:?Green infrastructure systems use natural elements like vegetation, soil, and permeable surfaces to manage stormwater and promote infiltration. Examples include green roofs, rain gardens, and permeable pavements that help reduce runoff and improve water quality. Urban Drainage System:?Urban drainage systems are designed to manage water within urban areas, including streets, sidewalks, and buildings. They aim to prevent flooding, control erosion, and protect infrastructure from water-related damage. These types of drainage systems are essential for effective water management, flood prevention, and environmental protection in various settings, including residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal areas. Each system has specific components and functions tailored to address different drainage needs and challenges.

City Planning# Water Construction Projects, Upgrades and Repairs Did you know the City of Calgary undertakes a variety of waterworks projects to: * Operate and maintain the water and wastewater collection and distribution systems in Calgary. * Provide repairs and maintenance for more than 16,000 km of underground pipes for water, sanitary sewer and stormwater. * Upgrade Calgary's water infrastructure to help expand its capacity and ensure it can meet the demands of a growing City. * Conserve and protect our water resources. Local drainage improvements The City’s Local Drainage Improvements (LDI) Program aims to better manage stormwater and avoid the pooling of stormwater and snow melt in localized areas throughout the city. These improvements include replacing or upgrading storm drains (catch basins), installation of additional storm pipes, surface regrading, and upgrading existing infrastructure to increase the flow of water into the system.
