Are you a CASA volunteer? Do you have questions? If you answered yes to both of these questions, then you're in luck because our June 26th In-Service Training is titled "I'm A CASA and I've Got Questions." Presented in-person by Randy Fike, MSW, LSW, CASA Volunteer, is hoping to assist current CASA/GAL volunteers revisit fundamental roles and strategies in assessment and advocacy for children. CASA/GAL volunteers will have an opportunity to learn from their peers while identifying areas of strengths in addition to sharing ideas on ways to improve. A few weeks back The Seattle Times Published an article addressing the fact that Washington schools are struggling to balance budgets. At the root, we know the issue is that the state does not fully fund education as promised by the 2018 McCleary decision. At AWSP, part of our work is advocacy for principals and students across the state and in this next legislative session, our focus will be on educating and pushing for the funding schools desperately need. Halfway into a successful 5-yr school reform project, the School District of Lancaster, PA lost significant state and federal funding. Working with the district's Communications Director #KeithPierce, #EdBuffman and I wrote and directed this award-winning PSA to bring attention to the inequities in PA state school funding, and to rally the community around the school district. Lancaster remained committed to school reform, even though the district had to raise taxes, and even helped elect Governor Rendell, who picked Lancaster Schools' Superintendent #VickiPhillips to head his Education Department, promising school reform. But nothing changed in Harrisburg's school funding formula then--or in the next years--until now. Now, Pennsylvania courts have finally declared that the way PA funds public schools is unconstitutional, because the quality of students’ education is determined by their zip code (and local property taxes).?Now, lawmakers in Harrisburg are debating a historic $1.8 billion increase for public schools as a first step toward delivering on the promise of a great education for every child.
