Watching the recent shifts in Germany’s automotive industry, I can't help but wonder why some car makers #thrive ?? while others—especially legacy ????German giants???? —seem to #struggle. Here are a few #thoughts, and I'm #curious to hear #yours too.
???From Car with Software to Software with Wheels
Today’s car is less “vehicle with software” and more “smart device on wheels.” Yet, traditional automakers still seem organized like manufacturing companies, not innovative tech firms. Former VW leadership once admitted they had over 100 operating systems but didn’t own a single line of code. Has this changed?
???Tankers vs. Speedboats
While Volkswagen transforms its vast organization, Volvo’s Polestar took a different route by forming an adaptive, independent unit. Rather than trying to change a large structure, they built fast-moving “speedboats” for flexible, cross-company collaboration along their supply chain. How do you treat your suppliers?
???Complexity vs. Partnership
In today’s world, supply chains need partnerships, not just cost optimizations. Car manufacturers must shift from mere transactions to co-innovation along the entire ecosystem. Do you co-innovate or still just deliver?
???User Experience First
Tesla and new players like BYD and Huawei understand user experience. They prioritize seamless integration and are already advancing in battery tech—leaving traditional automakers scrambling. Anybody knows more about the newcomers?
???Corporation vs. Entrepreneurship
It’s surprising to me that German automakers haven’t invested in their own charging infrastructure, following Tesla’s lead. Instead, they wait for government support while the future of fuel, like gas stations, is largely private. not sure if that's correct either ;-)
???Public vs. Private Initiative
In China, policy-driven goals around carbon reduction created fertile ground for rapid innovation. Meanwhile, German car manufacturers often seem to wait for subsidies rather than lead the charge.
Is Germany’s car industry facing its “Nokia moment”?-Is there still hope and if yes, what do you recommend to improve?
