Enough said... "The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheepdog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed. The world cannot work any other way, at least not in a representative democracy or a republic such as ours. - Still, the sheepdog disturbs the sheep. He is a constant reminder that there are wolves in the land. They would prefer that he didn’t tell them where to go, or give them traffic tickets, or stand at the ready in our airports in camouflage fatigues holding an M-16. The sheep would much rather have the sheepdog cash in his fangs, spray paint himself white, and go, “Baa.” Until the wolf shows up. Then the entire flock tries desperately to hide behind one lonely sheepdog. ....It is denial that turns people into sheep. Sheep are psychologically destroyed by combat because their only defense is denial, which is counterproductive and destructive, resulting in fear, helplessness and horror when the wolf shows up. - Denial kills you twice. It kills you once, at your moment of truth when you are not physically prepared: You didn’t bring your gun; you didn’t train. Your only defense was wishful thinking. Hope is not a strategy. Denial kills you a second time because even if you do physically survive, you are psychologically shattered by fear, helplessness, horror and shame at your moment of truth."" - -LT Col. The LiveFree OKC Peace Needs Conference was truly a powerful experience. The conference brought together a diverse group of voices from law enforcement, engaged citizens, and activists to faith leaders and elected officials. Together, we focused on policies of peace and community-driven solutions to one of the most pressing issues in our society: gun violence. Some of the sessions tackled critical topics like gun violence in America, community violence intervention, school-based violence prevention, and how faith communities can become true houses of peace. What struck me the most was the commitment to finding common ground – putting politics aside to build consensus for a safer future. As the board president of LiveFree OKC, I’ve witnessed firsthand the dedication and heart of our team. Their tireless work in serving Ward 7, is making a real difference – more of our children are making it home safely every day. I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished, but there’s still so much work to be done. If you believe in peace, justice, and a future free of gun violence, I invite you to join us. Follow the team on social media and consider donating to LiveFree OKC and supporting our mission. Together, we can continue to save lives and build a safer community. "Hope Haven is home to us. Here I can trust the people that are around my kids. I know when I close my eyes at night I’m not going to hear gunshots right outside my door. I never expected us to stay here as long as we have, but this has grown to be more of a family to us than our own family. Because of all we’ve learned at Hope Haven, we are looking to have a nice home of our own in the next year. We keep reliving an?old American horror story. This time in Winder, GA. Many of us have become desensitized of this topic: either due to the relentless continuity of these events, or because this issue has become needlessly politicized. However, no parent should outlive their children due to such senseless violence. I hope the latest school shooting is met with solutions, not words. This is not an attempt at fear-mongering. As a parent of high school kids, each of these events strike too close to home and it is especially frustrating when politicians declare that now is not the moment to talk about guns, and instead just share "thoughts and prayers"?for the victims and their families. If you, like me, are interested in taking action, I'd like to suggest a couple of options. I'm on the board of this amazing org called?New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, and there are two concrete ways you can do something about this issue (links in comments): 1)?Make a donation. Your (tax deductible) gift will fund educational programs at NYC public schools. Every bit helps.? 2)?Attend our benefit in NYC on October 8th. I'll be there! And I'd love to sit with you, share more about the org, and introduce you to the team. Let me know if you buy a ticket so I can put you at my table :) Thanks for reading through this, and I hope you do elect to take action - whichever way you can. ?#StopGunViolence #SafeSchools #ActNow New Yorkers Against Gun Violence Rebecca Fischer Rachel Peck Caitlin Semo Kevin O'Brien, CFP?

To say this day brings a lot of emotions would probably be an understatement. I was at the Super Bowl Parade on Valentine's Day with my 12-year-old son. We had the time of our lives. The night before, we had made a last second decision to stand along Grand instead of being at Union Station where I had been for the previous two championship parades (once as a reporter, and once as a mother and fan). A decision that turned out quite possibly to be a life-saving one. Never could I have imagined that in the car ride home, we'd be hearing reports of a mass shooting at the rally site. People fleeing for safety and finding shelter anywhere they could. One person would not make it home that day alive. I was sad for this city I've called home for seven years, but also not tremendously surprised. Violence rocks our community almost every day in #KansasCity. But what #KCStrong showed us, is that when we care about those left in its wake, we can have a tremendous impact. Over the course of about three months, KC Strong--a collaboration between United Way of Greater Kansas City and the Kansas City Chiefs garnered $2M in support from more than 4,000 individual donors. Today, every penny of that money is being invested to help 20 gunshot victims in their journey of healing and to support the critical work of 14 community organizations determined to help our region heal, build upon anti-violence prevention work, support mental healthcare needs, and to assist first responders. These investments may well have a generational impact. The past four months have not always been easy. The work has been under the intensity of the media spotlight, one that I stood on the other side of for 15 years. We've fielded hundreds of questions and concerns, and our 211 team has provided pivotal assistance to get help and resources directed more immediately to those in need. It's been a massive undertaking. At times, it's felt overwhelming. But today, I am proud. Today, I know our impact is being felt in a very real and meaningful way. Today, we are reminded of the power of our community and that we are forever KC Strong. #nonprofits #nonprofitleadership #kansascity #kcstrong #unitedway https://lnkd.in/g-SXBPUW

See below of another story of how TD Foundation impacts the lives of our veterans, and their families. Welcome your support, in any amount: https://lnkd.in/efjqMHiK #50Families50Days
Day 4 of the #50Families50Days?Campaign ? $1,650 of immediate relief from the TD Foundation for a struggling Veteran and his family whose car was being repossessed.? ? John, an OIF and OEF Marine Corps Veteran (2000-2004) was plagued by mental and physical injuries he received from combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Dealing with severe PTSD and a TBI, his family was in desperate financial straits and not getting the support they needed from the VA Caregiver program. John had stopped going to the VA due to severe, extended depression and mistrust of his doctors, and that set his family back. The veteran was giving up his truck so that they could keep the family car. He has also set up his first appointment in over a year and began the process of restoring the families benefits. The family car was behind four months and out for repossession. They needed $1,650 to get the account current and to prevent the repossession of the family's car. ? Requested Amount that TD Foundation provided: $1,650 ? To hear more amazing stories of impact from the TD Foundation, donate, or start your own fundraiser as part of our #50Families50Days?Campaign go to the link in comments below and follow us on social media.? ? #AliveDay #50DaysofImpact #OneVeteranFamily
