Carpooling in Brasília! Brasília's carpool scene offers a fascinating look at Brazil’s informal ridesharing culture. Here, the need to get places quickly and cost-efficiently fuels a simple matching process. It's an easy method to get to nearby places, like the mall near my house. When I used this informal carpooling system, the main mode of transit was small vans that were priced at the cost of a bus ticket. They even used the network of bus stops as route markers. All in all, it was a very useful way to get around. Now, a few years later, I watch the same process unfold as I drive by those bus stops. I’ll often see drivers stopping their vehicles, announcing their destination, and welcoming riders aboard to share a less expensive trip. It seems the people expect to see a familiar face coming to pick them up at their local bus stop. This organic solution resulted from Brasília's sprawling growth, which forced many residents to live far from their workplace or school, and made car ownership and gas too expensive for many Brazilians. Public transportation wait times were and still are very long. All of this helped pave the way for an innovative, people-based solution. Keep in mind that although this kind of carpooling meets a financial need, it can be unsafe – and so is not encouraged officially. So it happens on its own and exists outside government systems. Still, its popularity highlights an important aspect of our social structure. The demand for ridesharing solutions doesn't take away from public transportation. While there are enough people who prefer carpooling to avoid the crowded buses, the buses are still crowded. But a shared commute with people you trust is an appealing alternative. Being a woman, this is always a concern that I have to weigh when considering my options for local trips. As luck would have it, technology is stepping in. Apps and platforms are streamlining the carpool experience and making it easier and safer to find a ride. This is just one of the reasons I believe in the vision and mission of the Roam? marketplace. Soon we may all be sharing rides and strengthening our communities with the new connections we make while getting to the places we need to go. Join us. We envision a future driven by you. www.roam-marketplace.com #community, #transportation, #ridesharing, #socialcapital, #efficiency, #uniteconomics, #climatechangemitigation

?? Officially Scooty-fied! ?? Taking delivery of my new scooty today, even though I already have a bike ??? and a car ??! Why, you ask? Well, let’s call it my urban MVP (Most Valuable Purchase) for city commuting. ??? City life hack #101: A scooty can sneak through traffic like a ninja, fits into tiny parking spaces, and barely sips fuel. When you’re navigating city roads daily, every little bit counts — both time and fuel costs! ?? Cost-effective and eco-friendly: I get to zip around without feeling the pinch at the fuel pump or my conscience. And let’s be real, a scooty’s simplicity is downright charming! But… there is one thing I absolutely hate: having to pop open the boot every time I refuel ?. Yes, it's a small thing, but the struggle is real. ?? And no, an EV isn’t the answer for me — I know, I know, it’s the future, but I’ll save my reasons for another day. ?? Here’s to smooth rides, fewer parking headaches, and making city commuting sustainable and (mostly) hassle-free! ???? #ScootyLife #UrbanCommute #Sustainability #CityHacks

Some interesting results from Uber's One Less Car study (including Metro Van participants it seems!), where folks parked their car in exchange for $1300 in alternative transportation options. For me reading this, the perceptions and barriers people felt before and after car free living really stand out, and its something that is really important for our work at TransLink to incentivize behaviour change: we need to work together to change perceptions as well as remove barriers like a lack of safe infrastructure and frequent/convenient travel options. It also reaffirms to me that many of the projects we're working on at TransLink today are on the right track: ?? Our programs for Developments and Organizations gets subsidized transit passes and other travel options into people's hands at key moments in their life where change is most possible ?? Working with micro-mobility and carshare providers during construction and disruptions not only helps people move across the region and avoid congestion, but also leads to folks deciding to keep using those options even after the incentive ends! ?? The work TransLink is doing in active transportation and multimodal connectivity not only builds safe infrastructure that gets people moving across the region: its also encouraging folks to try it out, at any stage of their life, and change those pre-conceptions a bit! Would love to see more studies like this in our region identifying more ways we can encourage folks to try more transportation options!
What happens when you ask a Torontonian to give up their ?? for a month and pay them $1,300 to use on other transportation methods? At Uber, we wanted to find out. Canada has one of the highest rates of personal car ownership globally, with more than 26 million private vehicles on the road nationwide. As we all consider the impact that car ownership has on personal finances, the livability of our cities, and our environment, Uber launched the One Less Car trial in Canada this summer and today we’re releasing the results. Some highlights:? ? Three in every four (76%) trial participants said they planned to drive less and use alternative transportation options after the study.? ? Participants’ public transit use increased 238% during the trial.? ? The top four alternative transit modes were public transit, walking, carpooling and rideshare.? ? Urban participants favoured public transit, while suburban residents leaned on carpooling.? ? It took at least 2 weeks for participants to adjust to a car-light lifestyle. ? Participants claimed that forgoing their personal vehicles resulted in more shopping at local businesses near their homes and workplaces. https://lnkd.in/g9TRHYzi Laura Miller Yanique Williams Keerthana Rang Jonathan Hamel Michael van Hemmen Joanne Wong Victor Brailoiu
