We're happy to share a couple of funding opportunities from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Office of Science: The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science (SC) is announcing that $50 million is available to build foundations for SC research through traineeships at academic institutions that have been historically underrepresented in the SC portfolio. The Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW) initiative supports traineeships for students and postdoctoral researchers from non-R1 emerging research institutions and non-R1 minority-serving institutions in areas relevant to SC programs. SC seeks applications to develop traineeships for participants from these institutions that involve conducting research in partnership with a DOE-affiliated institution, including DOE National Laboratories, SC user facilities, Bioenergy Research Centers, or DOE Isotope Program Production Sites. In addition to a webinar describing the FOA, SC will host office hours on April 17, April 25, July 10, and July 18 at 2:00 pm ET for administrative questions related to the FOA. More information on RENEW initiative, including frequently asked questions and office hour registration, is available on the RENEW website. Link to FOA: https://lnkd.in/eYYnXkuw Register for Webinar: https://lnkd.in/eKjn4pUK -- The DOE SC also announced that $35 million is available to support fundamental research in all fields supported by SC to build research capacity at institutions historically underrepresented in the SC portfolio, specifically non-R1 emerging research institutions (ERIs) and non-R1 minority serving institutions (MSIs). This funding opportunity announcement aims to build research capacity through mutually beneficial relationships between applicants and DOE national laboratories, SC scientific user facilities, or R1 MSI/ERIs. Capacity building is interpreted broadly to include both personnel expertise and infrastructure and is expected to be durable, contributing over time toward sustained research strength at the lead institution. This funding will expand the talent pool to further the Department’s missions, transform our understanding of nature, and catalyze scientific discoveries that can lead to technical breakthroughs. More information on the Funding for Accelerated, Inclusive Research (FAIR) initiative, including frequently asked questions and office hour registration, is available on the FAIR website. While the academic, non-profit and industrial research communities are welcome to lead or to participate in applications, a strong component of student participation in research is required for all applicants. These awards are not appropriate mechanisms to provide support for individual faculty science and technology research projects. Ceiling $1,500,000 per year for new awards Floor $1,000,000 per year for new awards The EPSCoR program limits eligibility in an effort to ensure that federal research funds are distributed across the entire nation. Jurisdictions eligible for this #Funding #Opportunity #Announcement (FOA): Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, Virgin Islands, West Virginia, and Wyoming. #engineering #DOE #energy #EPSCoR #research #engineers

? AAPS Spotlight Series: Today we’re thrilled to highlight Dan Mason from Cohort 3, who is just entering his final year of PhD study! ? ?? What were you doing before joining AAPS? ??♂? Before AAPS I was finishing my undergraduate Master’s degree in chemistry, right here at University of Bath. I joined the CDT as I thought it would be a great opportunity to apply my knowledge to a field that I thought was interesting, having completed a placement with Shell, where I was looking at fuel formulations. ?? What is your PhD focussed on? ??♂? I am developing “precursor materials” that can be broken down, under heating, to formulate potential battery materials. The aim is to evaluate various species of these “precursors” to assess which is the best contender moving forward ?? If you could have any superpower what it be? ??♂? If I could have a superpower, I would want the ability to teleport (with a view caveats involved). ?? What does Advanced Propulsion Systems mean to you? ??♂? It means the development of propulsion systems to fit within an ever-changing future. ?? What is the highlight of being in AAPS for you? ??♂? The highlight of AAPS is the connectivity between different people that would not have crossed paths with otherwise. ?? What are you most looking forward to in the next 12 months? ??♂? In the next 12 months I look forward to culminating my final year with my thesis being written up. ?? Finally, what is your overall reflection of your time in AAPS so far? ??♂? Reflecting on my time in AAPS, I think it has been beneficial. I feel it has helped to develop my approach to certain problems, as well as being able to improve my understanding to highlight my research from a niche piece of work, to how it fits within part of a bigger system. ??
